Introduction

Hello, here’s a summary of what this year’s final project will be. I plan to record a split screen music video to the song 1979 by Smashing Pumpkins, which normally consist of multiple videos of each instrument being recorded. Primarily, my goal is to record a full cover of 1979 on drums, guitar and bass, as well as experimenting with programmed drums in the sections that use them. The addition of a keyboard part, I feel, is optional, as my main focus is on the quality of the guitar, bass, drums, recording and mix.

My L3X final project will be split into these parts, alongside the standard evaluative process that I will be using:

  • Rehearsal
  • Studio performance / recording
  • Mixing
  • Video editing

I’m choosing to do a studio focused project in order to build a portfolio for both my performance and mixing skills, as well as have something to show for progress in comparison to my last final project, which was similar in the fact that it was a studio recording project and different because last year I wrote an original song.

I want to record a cover of 1979 by Smashing Pumpkins because it sounds like a simple enough song that I can challenge myself on, as I feel I can learn the drum part quite quickly if I get over the fear of having to be extremely accurate on a very loud instrument, where practicing in ‘private’ is virtually impossible. The guitar part is something that I want to experiment with within the mixing phase, since I want to get a tone as close to the original as possible. The bass part is easy enough, I will just have to listen for the most fitting tone.
