I started this art with contrasting colours and dark themes involved, primarily not digitally but rather using paint and pencil. The process consisted of sketching out ideas, starting with initial idea sketches of a raven without a reference photo. This was soon followed by a second sketch which determined the basic features and body shape of the raven, which is what I stuck with in the end. I transferred this sketch, which was gridded 2x2cm, to a 3x3cm space totalling 30cm onto a medium canvas. This allowed me to experiment with different paint ideas and additional ideas.
The second part of this art piece was inspired by a photo of the moon I took earlier this month, which I planned on using for the background. I edited it to have a desaturated frame and a zigzag black pattern layered on top of it, as well as a saturation layer that gives the clouds the colourful effect.
I then took photos of the raven drawing and layered that over the background. I first made a grey background layer for this image and then layered the same photo of the drawing over and over again using colour dodge, burn and something else to allow the drawing to have no colour value on the inside. I put all of those layers, besides the background, into one layer and changed the background from grey to white by using a lightening layer.
Lastly, I added the song name shaped around the raven’s wings and added a sharpen effect onto it so it fit closer to how gritty the main subject is.
