Experimentation

This is the idea that I chose to develop. To me, it fit the theme of funk metal and was easy to work from as the ideas displayed were just the start of what I was imagining. I stuck with G major (double check, might be E) because I tend to lean towards it by default and it’s what i’m most familiar with.

The below ideas are what came before the main one. The first is the initial idea of the second audio file. The second is developed a little more. They both rooted from the idea that I had to try to see what I was capable of regarding different bass techniques, as slap and pop are very commonly heard in the style I’m writing in. To me, this idea wasn’t particularly easy to develop further and incorporate in a funk metal style. Most notes have a duration that feels too long, even at a high bpm, and I couldn’t form any ideas to work with it.

From this, I learnt that my technique and knowledge around what I was doing was adequate for recording simple ideas but not yet good enough to record properly to a standard I’m happy with.

Before the project was formally proposed, we were thinking of some ideas separately. Here’s what we did:

Bass Experimentation

This video is a collection of videos and recordings I took while sitting and experimenting with different ideas. For the most part, nothing I played here was easy to develop or had the sound I wanted to start with. All of my experimentation was on bass since I find that to be an easy starting point, especially for this style of music where bass is the main drive.

Drum Experimentation

After looking at what was actually recorded, I realised a few of the same ideas were repeated. In my opinion, the developed ideas were really good. Ultimately though it was up to Cody whether he wanted to use these ideas or lean towards what I had been using as placeholders until drums were recorded. He ended up using the Logic drums as inspiration or guidelines since we tried variating them and each time we changed them slightly, we got closer to what sounded best to us.
