Initial Ideas

Idea #1

I want to record a heavy funk rock EP with Cody consisting of three songs for public release and potential profit. I work with Cody outside of college so this will build our musical portfolio. This EP will require me to compose original ideas within a pair and be able to play suggested ideas so I’ll have to work on funk specific technique on the instruments I work on. Additionally, I need to be knowledgeable about recording techniques and mixing so I’ll need to practice mixing to ensure a better overall sound. Besides this, I should thoroughly research band promotion, branding and advertising. For this I should consider cover art, band art, logos, music videos and style we should work with for all of these but particularly the music videos. I should research distribution, like looking into DistroKid and what they do so we can get our music out there and make profit from it if we’d like.

This project would be the most likely to succeed because I’m most passionate about the ideas included in this. That and I think me and Cody would work well together with a balanced workload and friendly criticism.

Idea #2

Alternatively, I could create a cinematic storytelling project through lyrical poetry and acoustic accompaniment or, depending on theme, something heavier and more aggressive regarding more serious topics in the same style. I would have creative freedom in video content, storytelling through lyrics and composition. I was inspired by KickThePJ’s Colour Bandits project and would like to do something similar to this visually.

I’m unsure about the probability of this being successful as although it is less work than the idea above. I’m not sure about the facilities available to me and my confidence in performing to a script in a video.

Idea #3

Another idea would be to use loop pedals or control pads to perform re-imagined songs in my style on keys, guitar, bass and vocals. An example of this being done is Tyler Joseph’s performance below.

It would be a solo project focusing on improving my practical skills and performance skills while improving my confidence. I’d like it to be recorded in full with audio directly from the microphones. I’d likely pre-record small parts so I’m not starting from absolutely nothing. The focus would be on creating that huge mindblowing effect, like how the first song comes together using ableton and tech that does the same as what the AKAI pad in the video shown above does. I love the idea of building up a song to a point where it finally all comes together and creates a powerful feeling.
