Recording Sessions

I don’t have much evidence for what we did in the recording sessions but I can note what we did in detail.

We had some time to experiment with which way we were going to record. With click or without, as a whole band or individually. We tried every option and had a majority vote to play as a band without click.

To start with, we had Lukass play his part and record it through DI to set a foundation of what the rest of the band could work with. We re-recorded his part again later with the tone he wanted on top of the rest of the band. Once we had that, we played as a band with difficulty as Gideon couldn’t hear the guitar part that was leading us so that threw me off. We did three takes as a whole band, listening to each take once we were finished and deciding which was better out of the three. Then we set up the Electronics Titan condenser microphone in the live room for Luke to record his part without any background noise. This took a while, but we had time to spare so we recorded the song verse by verse with some being re-recorded after review.

Once that was done, I decided I wanted to re-do my bass part as I wasn’t happy that I missed a few notes in the first take. It took me one take to correct it and I was fine with how it sounded.

For the drums, we had a microphone on each tom, the top and bottom of the snare, the kick and two overheads for left and right panning.
Bass was recorded through direct input since my tone was clean and I wanted an impactful bassy sound. Rhythm guitar was initially recorded through direct input but was re-recorded in the studio through a microphone set up against the amp. The lead guitar was also recorded this way.
