Project evaluation

final evaluation of my project

for my culture project i focused heavily on digital media. i created animations and short films with audio because i believe being able to hear as well as being able to see what you’re looking at really immerses you and is an experience in itself.
as well as focusing on digital pieces i also explored some traditional forms of media. experimenting with different materials such as acrylic paints, watercolours , pastels , pens, pencils etc.

in terms of research i used articles (linked where used) and compiled my own stills and clips of classic horror films such as stephen king’s ‘ the shining ‘ and ‘carrie’, putting together using the editing software ‘capcut’

in this project, i didn’t come in contact with any major issues or problems, but i would say that i was indecisive in my own mind about what i wanted to do and could have definitely explored a more dramatic piece for my final.

for the project i have used the apps : picsart, capcut and ibis paint. all of this software is free to use and can be found on the app store on your phone.

in my original proposal i said that for my 2d element i was planning to paint a horror themed scenery. instead i painted something s little more familiar and i think it linked into my project better than how a scenery painting would.

overall, i am satisfied with my effort and work for this project, and i have found a love for creating horror pieces. i really enjoyed this topic and would continue to work with the materials i have.

3d element

no, your eyes are not deceiving you. that is a bloody magic 8 ball with chunks of brain on it.

for my 3d aspect to my project, i wanted to create an unusual murder weapon. i took a donated magic 8 ball and covered it in red paint , then molded bits of brain from airdrying clay.

this disturbing piece is supposed to make you feel uncomfortable and make you question why on earth would someone use such an odd weapon.

in history there have been many unusual murder weapons, so i took it upon myself to create a short video on the 3 strange weapons used to carry out the despicable crime.

Tim Burton research

another favourite artist of mine is tim burton. we all know his films and i don’t know anyone who doesnt love them. he is a household name that we all recognise.

burton has a very recognisable style of the name “burton-esque” named after himself.

4d- animation

here we were asked to make a gif, but i took it one step further and made an animation.

the animation is based on a video game, and uses audio the audio ‘falling down’. from the pixelated game, undertale. undertale is a 2015 roleplaying game where the player plays a young boy who has fallen into the underground, a large secluded region under the surface of earth. the game is spooky and has a dark colour scheme, displaying some horror undertones.

to create this animation i individually drew each scene on ibis paint and then took each scene into the video editing software capcut.

horror part 5

hell is a teenage girl

for my 4d project i chose to make a short video inspired by the “horrors” of being a teenage girl. the video starts with the iconic opening line from the movie ‘jennifers body’, a favourite of mine. midway through, the iconic line from the movie pearl. both of the main protagonists in these movies are teenage girls.

top- megan fox in jennifers body
bottom- mia goth in pearl

i wanted to take a spin on the traditional sense of horror and focus on what horror makes you feel. when i think of horror and the typical response towards the genre the words : uncomfortable, uneasy and disturbing come to mind. all these things can be felt just by existing as a teenage girl. wether its pressure from peers, i wanting to fit in or the over-sexualisation of adolescents in the media, they all have a similar feeling as a response.

horror part 4

some research on one my favourite artists junji ito’s work. ito is a japanese horror manga artist.

a collage of some of junji itos work
my go at creating a character in the style of junji ito.

junji uses a comic book style with lots of linework to create really impressive pieces. i created this with the drawing software ibispaint.

horror part 3

the pencil task

for this task we were each given a pencil with hearts on. from this we had to generate an idea based on our project theme and create a relevant piece of work
i chose to create some slasher art of the pencil being stabbed in someone’s eye.

horror part 2

here are my prints from when we created negative images in the dark room. i chose to draw a vampire inspired by 1940s new orleans . using the dark room was a really interesting experience and would be something id look into using again.
