Meaning of Salaam
There are 3 meanings included in the word Salaam.
- Peace
- Safety
- They are safe from my (person giving Salaam) tongue, hands, and intentions – I intend no harm towards them.
- Honor
When greeting someone with Salaam السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته, you are not just greeting that person.
السلام عليك
The above greeting is singular, addressing only one person. Peace be upon you.
السلام عليكم
The above greeting is plural. When greeting someone with السلام عليكم, you are not addressing a singular person, you are addressing a Plural. Why do we use a plural, when only addressing 1 person? The reason for this is, it is a greeting of peace and a prayer of peace. When you are praying a peace for that person, you do not just stop at them. You are praying for peace for them, their family, every single one of their affairs that is happening in every aspect of their life, what is conducive in attaining salaam, in this life and what will lead to ineffable and unending peace in the hereafter.
This is just one of several components of that greeting.
We never just stop at السلام عليكم. It is better to greet someone with more than they greet you with.
So we say,
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
We pray that the peace of the source of all peace, for this life be upon you, your family, your loved ones and in of your affairs as well as the mercy of god almighty for you, your loved ones and in all of your affairs and the blessing of god all mighty for you, your loved ones and in all of your affairs
