Portraits – Final Piece

FINAL PIECE PLANNER

For my final piece, I got some ideas.

  1. Make 2 graphic design portraits and 2 traditional art portraits on a 50 x 50 canvas. Graphic design portraits will be inspired by Joe Cruz. Traditional art portraits will be inspired by Jonathan Yeo.

To link it with future, I intend to use gold leaves on traditional art portraits. And, to make it link with Accu, I want to use screws and nuts as heads, but not on all portraits.

2. Design and draw a face and then make that design out of clay.

To link it with Accu I intend to make screws and bolts out of clay and add it on hair. And, to link it with future I think of using metallic paint.

I though of some designs but not pleased with any of them as they don’t remind me of Accu at all:

I tried to make a small portrait out of clay to see if I could make a face in the first place:

It’s inspired by svv.art on Instagram.

I wanted to make a head from one of my old drawing:

I wanted to give up as soon as I started – I couldn’t make the head shape like in the picture. And, I didn’t have the right clay. I needed oil based clay but I only had air drying clay.

I skipped the hair part as I didn’t know how to make it. I just put a screw on the head and coloured it with acrylics.

3. Make a portrait out of screws. Screw on a wooden board. Inspired by Andrew Myer.

I think that the 3rd option, make a portrait out of screws, is the best and suits Accu the most. So, I chose that option.

This technique is inspired by Andrew Myers. He is a German artist and he lives in Spain. At the age of 20, he applied to Art Institute of Southern California. When he applied to the institute, he had no art training. He’s signature artwork is Screw Art.

I got a wooden board, lots of screws and a drill.

I experimented with the screws and tried to make it like Myer did but it didn’t turned out how I wanted.

I noticed that Myer put screws in straight lines next to each other. And, he makes his artworks in a 3D style. I tried it, but it was difficult to figure out where the screws need to go deeper.

From the side, it doesn’t look like a face:

Before I started to put screws in I made a quick sketch so I would know where to put screws.

I didn’t like Myer’s technique, so I thought to put screws all the way in the wooden board and colour it with acrylics. While colouring, I plan to make it like a pixelated drawing.

While I was half way through I noticed that I didn’t have enough screws to fill in the whole drawing. So, I had a change of plan.

To save money and time, I put screws on top and a little bit on the bottom. I screwed them like they were ‘spilled’. On the middle I coloured the portrait with acrylics. I drew a sketch digitally.

I thought that it would be easy to draw on the wooden board, but it definetly wasn’t. I’m used to draw on small canvas, paper etc. So, it was a little bit difficult to paint a big drawing. The other problem was with shading. I didn’t have the right brushes to paint carefully and don’t know how to mix acrylics. I tried to search online but couldn’t really find anything – so, I tried to mix the colours like I choose on the colour wheel digitally. For example, to make shadows on skin digitally I choose a skin colour + red. I tried to do the same with acrylics.

I don’t quite like how the eyes turned out. They turned out darker then the whole drawing.

The wooden board was really big, so I went to college to cut it to a shape of the drawing. I used an electric saw. A tutor helped me to cut it.

At first I didn’t really like how the drawing turned out. But, after looking at it more I started to like it. I’m pleased on how the end results turned out.

I noticed that acrylics are peeling off the screws. I don’t really know how to fix it.
