Project 5: Research and Context

Peter pan, also known as ‘the boy who wouldn’t grow up’, is the main character within Disneys 1953 animated feature film, ‘Peter Pan’. The film has gone on to be recreated many times as well as having multiple films based on it.The movie tells a story about a girl, Wendy Darling, meeting Peter Pan after he hears her spinning stories in London from a whole other Realm, The enchanted isle of Neverland. On many occasions, Peter Pan has faced his enemy, Captain hook who is accompanied by his pirates. Before being his own character, he was appearing within J.R Bourne’s ‘ the little white bird’. Within the movie, we see peter pan meet Wendy and her brothers before they all embark on a journey into Neverland. Shortly after arrival, they encounter Captain Hook, Creating an uproar. This leads to Wendy & her brothers leaving and going back to London and taking the lost boys with them. However, they leave Pan behind.

Peter Pan

Peter pan has been apart of many peoples childhood’s for more than 100 years. He is a lovable character that many have got to know through the different adaptations within Film, Books, television and stage productions. Pan is known to have a mischievous side which draws a lot of children in. He’s able to fly and is said to never grow up. He comes from the magical lands called Neverland. In Neverland, Pan is the leader of the lost boys. Pan is known for his adventurous and outgoing characteristics. The themes within Peter Pan explore Childhood, Imagination and the desire to stay young forever.

Captain Hook

Hook is the main antagonist within the Peter Pan Franchise. Hook is known for his obnoxious and ruthless life as a pirate who always tries to take down Peter pan. Hook is also known for his hook that replaced his hand after it was cut off by Pan and fed to a crocodile. This is the only explanation for the name captain HOOK. Hook is also known as being overly dramatic with his hatred towards Pan. Hook is one of the most popular villains ever crested by Disney as he has definitely made his mark on children over the past century.

Wendy Darling

Wendy Darling is another main role within the Peter Pan franchise. She’s known for her motherly personality as she’s always looking out for her brothers and the lost boys. Wendy is also known for her bubbly and adventurous spirit and imagination. She embarks on an unknown journey with Pan through Neverland. Her character is also known to be brave and resourceful, things like thee are shown when she faces challenges within Neverland. Wendy is a beloved character within the Peter Pan franchise. Within the franchise, she is portrayed as compassionate with a brilliant imaginative yet complex brain which makes her the perfect role model for children all over.

Musical Theatre

Both musicals and musical theatre are some of the most magical journeys filled with music, dancing and storytelling. They bring millions of people together. They are both beautiful ways to tell complex stories. They tell these stories through choreography and through singing. Musicals explore many themes such as love, hatred, and war. These themes are explored underneath the surface as they are deeper meanings covered by upbeat music and choreography. For example, Heathers the musical, it has such beautiful and captivating choreography and vocals however when you do a deeper search into it they explore themes such as Bullying, Suicide, Mental health and abusive relationships. There is also musicals without the dark meanings, Such as Burlesque. This musical explores more adult themes and adult comedy.

Split Personality Disorder

Split personality disorder also known as Dissociative identity disorder, is explored within our concept of peter pan through pan himself. Split personality disorder is a complexed mental health disorder, This shows 2 personalities within a single person. Both personalities have completely different lifestyles. Due to them both seeing things differently, they may experience memory loss and gaps in their memory an example of DID is DR Jekyl and Hyde.

Mutism

Mutism is a condition developed by a person, it can come as a difficulty speaking or just unable to speak at all. Many things can trigger mutism such as anxiety and trauma. It can be treated through things like speech therapy. When at speech therapy , it helps you slowly overcome the issue. Things like gradual exposure can help overcome it, this is when the person is steadily exposed to different scenarios and situations they have to address verbally. However, everyone is different so for some people t will be a quick process and for others it may take years to get over the mutism. Mutism is shown in our performance through Tinkerbell. The guilt of killing pan makes her go mute right until the very end of or performance.

Split screen

Although split screen is mainly used within the theatrical side of the industry, it is sometimes used within film also. Split screen is when 2 scenes are performed on stage at the same time as each other. This allows the audience to see a variety of things being done at once, It is mainly used to show 2 scenes happening at one time. This may be a good idea sometimes however, for some people it may be overstimulating. Split screen has had a very powerful impact over the industry as it is a very creative way to create tension and draws you in further. It helps make the performance more alluring to viewers and helps to build up and add depth and meaning to the performance overall. We use split screen during the preparing for battle scene, we use it to show both sides ad how they deal with preparing to fight and what they do as the other side gets ready for the battle.
