Microphone research

Shure SM57

This is a dynamic microphone that is mainly used to record guitar amps in studios because it records all the mid frequencies nicely and these are the main frequencies produced by a guitar.

Shure SM58

This is a dynamic microphone mainly used for vocals in live performances because it doesn’t pick up sub frequencies or quite high frequencies so it doesn’t feed back as much when you’re on stage performing.

Neumann U87

This is a condenser microphone which is most commonly used for recording vocals in the studio. This microphone is very versatile and consistent in picking up frequencies from low to high. It doesn’t pick up really really low frequencies properly but it does the job when recording most things.

Mic positioning research we did with lewis to see how micing up guitar, bass and drums can differentiate tone.
