Foley sounds are used to enhance the auditory experience of the movie. It can also cover up unwanted noise that would ruin certain aspects of the film.
For the card shuffling video, i would use a book and flip the pages quickly. Or use some thick paper or even just cards to mimic the sounds of the deck. The video was also near a beach. So i would add in ocean and seagull noises.
Foley artists would use a cut up paper back book for the cards and add in some background noise if it was set in a casino.
For the plant jar lifting video i would add in a glass hitting the desk noise. And for the context of the video, it may be an advert or youtube video, so i would add in music or background noises from a household.
For the sound of the cat drinking water we used a tap and made a thin layer of water in the sink. Using that water we splashed droplets around and made ripples in the water to mimic the sound of the car drinking.
The context of our video is, ‘ the night after a party’. To do that we put music on loudly behind a door and recorded with the mic. This gave the idea that there was music still playing in another room.
The cat in the video was moving its head to get to the bottom of the glass. To make this noise we used a sponge and brushed it against a glass.
A foley artist would use glass bottles and floorboard noises to add in footsteps for sound effects.
