For my film composition I chose the short film Stadtmitte which is named after a train station in Berlin when translated to english the word stadtmitte means city center.The short film has a very creepy arthouse feel to it with a lot of distorted shots and stressful looks.
I want to create a piece of music that adds to the anxiety enduring camera work and I would also like to create a very industrial piece of music that will match with the city since Berlin is a very industrial city.With the focus of the film being a train station I am very sure this type of music will work very well.
The tempo of the composition should be slow and deep with barley any high notes except maybe for pitch shifting in the middle of transition. changes in the music will fit in with new camera angles, Also each switch should have a slow build up before a new sound is introduced in the music.
The emotion of the piece should be dread or paranoia mixed in with stress,The pace should definitely be slow and methodical which combined with the emotion of the music will create a very intense atmosphere.
The Film
This is the film I will be making my composition for,I picked this film because it was the most artistic and interesting one I could pick and would fit perfectly with the style of music I would like to do.
Inspiration
For my film composition I took heavy inspiration from the son Closer by Nine Inch Nails,The song has a very stressful feel with the synthesiser being a big part of the song,The song focuses on low notes for the majority of the song before suddenly switch to a higher chord progression for the chorus.
First I added a bass line with very low notes to match the energy of the film and also to create a build up for the EDM bass I would use for large majority of my composition.I also decided to add drums to further create a build up for the synthesiser.
Just before the EDM bass comes into the song I decided to stop the drums and pitch shift the last note of the bass up then I added a 70s funk clavichord as a little beginning for the main part of my composition.
For the main part of my composition I used a dark bass drive because of its haunting sound which I think fitted well with the look of the film.This will take a large section of the song before switching to a new instrument to finish the song.
For the end of the song I added a guitar with a lot of distortion to still fit with the sound of the song while at the same time being a good way to finish the song.
To fill out the main part of my composition I decided to add a synthesiser that fitted well with the dark bass drive while also fitting well with the sound of the whole piece.
