Guitars – I’m gonna talk about the evolution of guitar playing from the 1900s to the present. I will be going to start at the beginning of the evolution from the making of the lute all the way to the modern guitars such as the latest 9 stringed guitar.
the first guitar was a lute but eventually the shape of the instrument changed “many lutes had up to 20 or 30 strings – but the lute-like shape of the instrument was fading in popularity. By the 15th and 16th centuries, musicians in Spain began to favor instruments featuring the familiar curved shape we now associate with guitars.”
The guitar and the lute differ mainly in their strings and sound. The lute usually has more strings arranged in pairs, including bass strings that play octaves together, which creates a fuller and softer tone. The guitar has fewer single strings, making it simpler to play and producing a brighter sound.
- How did the name “guitar” evolve from ancient terms like the Greek kithara?
the word kithara was said to be played by Apollo the god of music but has no relation with the lute or the oud.
- When and where did the first instrument specifically called a “guitar” with an hourglass shape and a flat back appear?
- How did the number of strings and the standard tuning change from early instruments (four or five courses/double-strings) to the modern six single-string configuration?
- What role did different cultures, such as the Moors in Spain, play in the instrument’s development and spread?
