When I heard this track for the first time, I knew that there was something about it that I really liked. That must have been two years ago. I heard it again a couple of months ago when I was doing a set and I realised what it was that made this track so memorable. The crowd seemed to get really excited and hyped over the spoken word elements of the song. It made them feel like they were in some sort of fever dream, but in a good way. Its the perfect mix of having someone feel so euphoric, yet so uneasy. The couldn’t anticipate what was to come next, and I loved that about this track. So naturally I had to give it a go.
when looking for the sample, I had to pick wisely. I needed something that not only sounds cool, but can also connect with people on an emotional level. The sample is all about finding comfort in the music that the DJ is playing. They are trying so hard to feel comfortable in the rave, which can often be a busy and quite uncomfortable scenario. The more they try, the more they fail and that is expressed perfectly in the words “Every time I take one step forward, I end up going two steps back”. This is relatable to a lot of people as raves have quickly become a hostile environment. With the introduction of social media, people are scared to go out and have a dance, with the fear they may be recorded and plastered over social media. This has been a common theme, especially in the last few years. Clubs and Raves will never go back to being how they were during the golden era of the 90’s.
There is a choice to be made. You can either live in fear and not go to these events, or go and experience a rave for what it truly is, and that is a life altering experience. Raves are like no other form of live music, it can make people feel many different emotions, sometimes at the same time, and this can be quite difficult to grasp. However, if you just let your emotions take there toll and don’t hold back, then you will find yourself in a much more comfortable state. Just before the second drop, the man says “I’m just gonna let this one ride, you know what I mean?”, and right there, these words have just told a story. They have told a story of a young man overcoming nerves and just being able to enjoy himself, and I think that will really connect with an audience.
I’ve not only taken inspiration from the vocal samples, but also the other elements of the song. The rolling bass and melodic synths make this track easy to listen to and easy to enjoy. I took inspiration from these elements and made the track of my own. I differ slightly from this style as my drops are a bit harder, but other than that, they could both be played in the same set and no one would bat an eyelid.
