For our Final Major Project auditions, we weren’t just auditioning for an acting role like we did in our production of ”A Christmas Carol” Production. As this is a musical theatre production, we also had a dance audition, as well as the option for a singing audition for those who wanted a singing role. For our acting auditions, we were placed into groups and given a script from a musical to preform together. My group was given a scene from ”Mamma Mia” and for the character, I chose to audition as ”Donna Sheridan” as she is the lead in this musical and I wanted to go for a lead role in our last project. Having a main role was challenging, even with the script only being a small scene due to the amount of lines that Donna had, and I had a hard time memorizing all of the lines. To help me have a better chance at remembering my lines in time for my audition, me and Lucas continuously read through the scene to help us both begin to memorize the lines which really helped me keep the lines stuck in my head as well as the cues before my lines. During the audition, I blanked and forgot a few of my lines due to being nervous, but I improvised as I remembered the subject of the lines so I stayed on topic. While I didn’t manage to get a main role I did get my other choice “Evil Queen” which I am really happy with.
Since I was debating between which characters I wanted to audition for, I took part in the singing auditions. This is because I was considering the roles of Rapunzel or Gothel nerve wracking as this is something I have never done before. For the audition, we had to choose a song from a musical. I chose a song from my favourite musical, Hamilton, with the sing ”Wait For It”. I chose this song because it is a song easily memorized the lyrics and the cues. When it came to audition, I was extremely nervous, which could be heard in my voice making my sound extremely shaky. This is a song that should be belted and my nerves were not allowing me to do so. Due to this, I unfortunately didn’t get the roles I originally wanted. If I was going to do a singing audition again, I would chose a a song that will work better with my nerves.
For the dance audition, Michael created a dance for us to learn a few weeks before the auditions to a song called ”Power” by Will.I.Am. The dance was a fast-paced, athletic, commercial style dance. We were put into lines horizontally to each create our own into to the dance which would lead into the dance that Michael created for us, After this we were put into another group vertically where we created a dance of sixteen counts to follow what Michael taught us to the ending. We also had a travelling audition in our first groups where we created a small piece to travel across the studio floor with. While this audition didn’t determine our characters as much, I was still very nervous, especially as I missed part of learning the choreography due to illness although I am really proud of taking leadership skills during the second group when creating the last part of the dance.
