I didn’t choose this one because personally I really couldn’t think of anything to put to it and felt out of my creative spectrum, I felt like the clip didn’t need any music to it and was fine on it’s own.

This was a good candidate as the video as a whole was relatively smooth, calming and wasn’t really that diverse in terms of scene changes so this makes is simple to create something like a blues track or soft mellow track. The reason I didn’t pick it was because i wanted more changes and chances to make my song more diverse.

I didn’t choose the movie clip because of similar reasons to the pans labyrinth. It has too many fast moving scenes and I just didn’t know what to make for a James bond movie scene.

Why i chose stadmitte:

Out of the 4 options we had to make a track to a video I chose stadmitte, the reason because I thought it was very calm and had smooth flowing edits but also had some diversity and glitching going on and dark themes, this makes it relatively easy for me to make a song to it as I like to make music that has a clam feel to it but also a powerful and dark impactful feel to it too. When I saw the clip it reminded me of the Pyramid song by Radiohead because of the nostalgia feel of the parts of the city recoded in the clip and how it makes you feel a lone and kind of makes you question what your seeing/hearing, and the radio head song gives you a similar feeling to that too so I thought my song should replicate that feel.

Here I started my song with a synth that had a lot of delay and reverb, which is then mixed in with some violin. I did this by creating the midi tracks for all the instruments I wanted to use and then testing synths to see which one I preferred most. I then recorded the synth through keyboard as the depending how hard you press on the keys it would manipulate the sound the the synth. Then I harmonised the violins from where the synth would start to die down.

Here above is our spotting table. We use a spotting table to document our work but also to show the changes in our songs in more depth. This is important because it shows what work we have done and what time we did it I the track and showing what instruments we used, this is also used so if you’re lost you can go back to the table and plan your next move.

leitmotifs: These are used in films to signify a characters appearance in a film or their presence like in star wars when ‘The imperial march’ soundtrack comes on or in James bonds films or the Harry potter theme tune. This signify a character and can make the film more ‘on your toes’. Say if you heard the Darth Vader song but couldn’t see him you would still feel the presence of him, and thats an effect a leitmotif can have.

Here we have a James bond scene. To give the scene more emotion when the chasing stats the music starts with fast moving and dynamic violins and low drum rumbles and trumpets, this helps the scene have a fast and intense feel. Bond looses the person he is chancing and then all instruments cut off accept the drums, the reason for this is because if the music was to carry on like before it would keep the feel of the scene intense instead of relaxed. The reason a film has music like this is to engage the viewer to an increased feeling and understanding of what is going on and how even the characters are feeling too. Say this music was replaced with the sponge bob theme tune it would feel rather silly or and not intense.

Evaluation: I like my concept of the song and thought i had a good building block like intro synth with the violins blended in and the verse chord phrasing and then the intense heavy rock chorus. I wanted to create something heavy but soft. Also thought my chord choice for the 2nd verse mixed the theme of the track well. Timing with my tracks was a major issue with this song as you can hear and the overall mixing of the song, like the solo section was too loud and the 3rd verse before the solo was too quiet.

  • Technical Proficiency: I knew initially i wanted fuzz bass intro and a calm intro and heavy ending. I based my song off the synth intro was then going to create a different track but then that came to be difficult so i used the same chords from my song writing composition and created it that way.
  • Instrumentation Selection: I used a synth from logics software to start the intro and then also bended that in with some violin as i would then reuse the violin for my verse to give the song a familiar feeling.
  • Mixing and Sound Quality: I would say its decent. The instruments are all recorded clearly and the rest is all digital. Just my mixing and guitar tones made the overall quality diminish.
  • Synchronisation with Film: Its clear the music is intentionally put together. With the wave synth somewhat matching the trains motion and then the bass kicking off when the doll and dark back ground comes on, to then verse chords matching the swoon of the train journey in tunnels.
  • Efficiency in Editing: I used the scissors tool to snip a lot of my recording to get unwanted noises out, but also cropped ,most of the violins to match the timing of my chords, same with the length of the wave synth at the start of the song so it ends at the right time.
  • Effectiveness of Logic Pro X Features: Inspired by Nirvanas MTV Un-plugged I used the software’s violins to make my 2nd verse have a different sound to the 1st one and make it more interesting. I also developed all my bass and guitar tones using Logics amp and pedal sims. And crated the intro using a wave synth from there selection,
  • Workflow and Organization: I would say at the start it was going well as I had all my structures and ideas set out for my song, but then I was too focused on making each part perfect which set my back a lot and caused my song to more more unfinished.
  • Adaptability: It was fairly simple as to figure what I wanted to make I watched the video a couple times and figured it out that way and developed my structure from it.
  • Overall Impact: I would say it enhances the film and gives it more feel to it as intense or dark parts of the song match the film and when the film is less intense it clams down to match the film, but because there was no words on the screen nor lyrics it doesn’t create a meaning in mind.
  • Mood and Atmosphere: Id say it matches very well, as when dark or intense themes arrive in the film the music matches with it (The heavy bass at the start and the thrashing of chords at the end) but then when the movie calms down you get the saying chords and a more soothing sound.
  • Emotional Resonance: At the start the heavy bass compliments the creepy spinning doll with the spooky background, and towards the end you get a sped up journey of walking through the train station which is matched with heavily distorted thrashing chords.
  • Timing and Synchronisation: You can tell the music is suppose to match the track but there is major timing issues that I didn’t sort out in time because of perfectionist problems.
  • Continuity and Flow: Not very smooth as I had timing issues due to recording most of my work instead of using Logic to create my guitar and bass tracks, reason I did this is because it sounds really programmed and robotic.
  • Impact on Viewer Experience: I think it makes the viewer more engaged and interested in to what is happening in the video and makes them more likely to watch the whole thing as the original sound is quite strange and makes you un interested fast and gives the viewer a un common feeling of interest as the video is strange but then also the music is widely diverse.
