Writing a riff and adding layers <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Riff creation <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To make the main riff I have used a synthesizer with some psychedelic influences using a repeating riff that provides a good flow with the drums the idea behind this style of riff was to seem out of the ordinary like the instrumental part near the end of Ruiner from the downward spiral the sound of the riff was inspired from 2 sources, the intro from Nebulith’s “Startrippin” and “Avenged Sevenfolds nobody.” I wanted a riff that was softer than “Nobody” as it has quite a heavy riff sound and I didn’t think that this would fit well with the timelapse as it would have been too strong of a main riff. I think a mix between the two allows for the strangeness of something like Ruiner whilst being soft and minimalistic to create this strange sound. I think that this riff works well with the movie because there is a lot of cosmic parts of the movie with things like the red skies or the auroras that make it seem sort of psychedelic because of this I think that this works really well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Influences <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My influences for this project were Nebulith, Black Sabbath, Avenged Sevenfold, Nine inch Nails, KMFDM, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. My song influences include Beautiful Morning, We love you and G. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ambient effects<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For my ambient effects I have added panning and I have one sound for each side to add more of a sense of strangeness there is a drum kit on the left side that plays mainly a light cowbell and a ride symbol and hi-hat this is just to add extras on top of the main drum line, this adds to the sound whilst still allowing the main riff and drum line to be still easily heard like Motorhead’s Overkill where all the parts are easy to hear even though its very loud and has lots of intricate parts I also added another synth in the right ear to add more to the sound<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I added an electric piano to add more to the sound and to give more of a strange effect and to give the track repeatabillty as this way there is less that the listener can hear in one listen whilst not taking away from the timelapse. I just played chords in the C major scale for this to keep some simplicity to keep a balance between the intro to where the main riff starts and takes the lead part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quantization <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I quantized my organ and synthesizers to give a more coherent sound this helps me keep it in time |I have changed many of the notes to fit better in to the scale, the main scale that I used was the C major scale to add a degree of simplicity to the composition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adding effects <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I added reverb to the vintage flutes to to add more of a open sound to the flutes this gives a more psychedelic feel whilst still giving the idea of uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mixing the track <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I changed the levels of the instruments, I did this because some of the instruments were too loud and because of this it was too distracting and took away from the parts that were leading. I also added 2 organs to add a small amount of bass to the lower end and later in the track I added an organ part to to add some variation as throughout this film there were parts that sounded very repetitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
