intro
for our FMP (final major project) we are doing Grimm fairy tales this play focuses on the effect of modern-day technology on the teenage mind and how the evil character uses this to take over the world through social media, tv phones, etc.
the main idea of the script is the three main characters set off on a journey to get all the fairy tale princesses to stop evil however the princesses have been taken over by modern-day technology and have forgotten their true selves and are reminded of who they really are when the recall there past which is then written the ancient book of fairytales.
reflections
in the first week, we started with a full read-through of the script this is where we sat in a circle and read the script as our characters said our lines this allowed us to understand the full story and our characters this also helped with characterization and understanding who our character is and what they do and why they do it.
I felt that this was useful to me as it allowed me to understand the full story and how everyone played their characters. This was useful to me as it allowed me to understand how my character should react to others in order to make it more realistic and natural.
next time I plan on focusing more on my character and how they act and react to different situations. This would let me perform the character more natural and realistic.
before this, I looked at who my character was and what his story was. using this I designed my character’s body language and speech I then adapted this to work with the other characters and how my character would behave around them.
in week 2 we lost some peers to a field trip so we finished the choreographing for “we go together” and worked on blocking the first act as we had most of the main cast.
I started the week feeling stressed about how we were going to work with most of the class missing and how this was going to affect the production of the performance however during the week I felt that we were able to work effectively around this issue at the end of the week I felt that we had got a reasonable amount of work done.
we got round the problem by focusing on areas that we knew we could do and filling in for certain people in scenes and perfecting them we then filled in the rest of the class when they came back. however next time I think I will help lead more and put more ideas forward.
for this week I looked at the different scenes that we were doing and how they could be blocked to help when we worked on the scenes. This helped as when it came to working on scenes I already had an idea of what it could look like.
in week 3 we stared and finished the “revolting children” dance we also stared the “all in this together” dance. I worked with ‘Tara’ and ‘Olivia’ to try and develop the dance this was out of my comfort zone as I am not strong in dance.
I felt that I could have help more with the development of the dance and put more ideas forward.
when researching for this week I looked at the songs that were in the dances and learned the words to them.
we also worked on our singing skills we did this by picking a song and sang it while jogging on the spot we did this as it was to help us for when we have to sing and dance at the same time we also did this to find the right amount of energy to put into the other songs when singing them.
next time I feel that I need to help more in dance and have better teamwork.
Monday:- training day so we were off
at the start of the week we worked on the “all in this together” dance and worked on solos in the afternoon we continued to work on the dance in the morning then developed our sinning and dance skills in the afternoon.
I felt confident that we were developing well with the performance and that we were able to go through act 1. I felt more confident with the dances by the end of week and I was starting to feel confident with my singing skills however I still need to work on it.
the next day we had a Q and A with the author of the script ‘David Ayres’ and asked him many questions about the script and the different characters.
this week was focused on scenes and blocking we had multiple runs of the whole show however people lost focus very easily which was not good as we did not have enough time to mess around we also did not have enough work to use as we had not gone through Act 2 enough. Monday afternoon we worked on scrapbooks where people were more focused and we were able to get more work done.
on Wednesday we focused on solos and the others worked on scrapbook
solos:
helpless
surface pressure
alive
friends on the other sides
waving through the window
take a chance
we had some problems with the mics during the solos however we managed to solve the problem. at the end of the work we ran through Act 2 to try and get more work done before the week ended however, we did not manage to get through the whole act.
As we approached the due date for the performance we worked more on refining the scenes and dances and working on the transitions between each scene and dance, this was difficult when we decided to changed jailhouse rock as we cut the dance and changed it to the riot that the dwarves make in order to get the main characters into jail to rescue red riding hood.
