Task 4: Execution of your marketing strategy

Proof of concept

This was a very challenging and interesting project as it felt as though we were actually given a job and were working for an organisation, which I found really exciting.

Social Media content is always something I’ve been fascinated by and something I’ve worked on and played around with since I was 8 years old. While creating promotional work for a company is not something I am very familiar with, I feel as though the content displayed in the end was to a very high quality.

I really struggled with the marketing aspect of this project. Something I’ve never really done before mixed with finding the research really difficult, I found the starting part of the project really difficult to complete. For example, researching different examples of when marketing has gone wrong or right and then deciding what type of marketing strategy that is was a real challenge for me. In future, I would put more work into working out what I need to learn about new things that may be reach outside of the base course and to be more open-minded about subjects that are new to me.

My interview with the National Science and Media Museum representatives went incredibly well. My final product of 2 videos were received really well by them, and they were picking up on things which I wanted them to like how accurate my branding was compared to the official Science Media Group brand. Aside from the final product, I feel the interview itself was very professional and thought I handled myself very well in what can be a quite intimidating or stressful environment.

I also explained how I completed the projects. This was not a question I was ready for so had to think on the spot, and it was quite complicated as I completed the project in a different way to which I usually would. I explained how I first visited the NSMM and filmed around 20-30 minutes of content, then added it all to a Premiere Pro timeline and from there created the script and recorded voice over. As this was so in the moment, I definitely stuttered over myself in some places so in future I would like to prepare myself more for questions I’m not expecting.

Creating the videos were really fun to both film and voiceover. I’ve never had a project like this and since the NSMM has been closed for over a year I had to refresh myself with what is still inside the museum since renovation. I first had a day to look around, just to remind myself of the content inside the museum and then the next day made another trip down just to get a few shots of inside the museum and the different attractions open. Then adding the videos to the premiere pro file and editing while creating a script is completely different to how I would usually create script, film and then edit. This new approach with this style of video is perfect as you can get loads of B-Roll and then create your script on top of that, so you always have extra content if necessary.

Overall, this project has been extremely valuable to both diversifying the content on my portfolio but also creating skills within marketing and content creation for a company or client. This whole idea of making a video following a brand guideline and the image of the organisation is a massive responsibility to hold and with this project it helped me learn how to handle that responsibility well. The interview aspects of the project also really helped my confidence when it comes to interviews in general, and how important it is to remember that you can’t prepare for everything so “expect the unexpected” in a sense.
