Personal Statement
I have always been deeply interested in media as a whole, particularly production and content creation. Growing up in Bradford, home the National Science and Media Museum, I was absolutely fascinated by all the different exhibits and attractions, which I believe inspired my passion for content creation and started my desire to pursue a career in the media industry. Throughout secondary school and college, I’ve been lucky enough to have the opportunity to try out different creative projects, such as producing a mock radio station in my bedroom, hosting and editing podcasts, making YouTube videos and getting very confident in platforms such as Premiere Pro as well as learning how the YouTube Algorithm works, creating and directing various short films during college and even producing my own music. These experiences have not only polished my technical abilities but also deepened my understanding of the teamwork which is necessary in bringing ideas like these to life. Using professional programs like After Effects and Premiere Pro gave me experience using industry standard programs which would give me a great head start in my career.
As well as my academic and personal projects, I’ve gained valuable experience at Hollywood Bowl, where I’ve been trained across multiple roles, including working on a bar, managing the lanes and working on reception. Working part-time in the service industry has boosted my confidence in public speaking and really showed me the importance of customer service. It also gave me a solid understanding of the value of earning money through hard work, which is something that will help me in any position I may have in the future.
I was also honoured to be chosen by Bradford College to go on a work experience trip to Aruba. While I was there, I interviewed residents involved in the Aruba Art Festival and I had the opportunity to create advertising that was displayed on billboards around the island. While there, I also watched the national TV service of Aruba interview artists on the island and this gave me a great understanding of how live broadcasts work. The experience not only gave me an amazing opportunity to go abroad and learn from a completely different culture, but also allowed me to work in a professional environment while creating content to an industry standard.
Another project I worked on was when, at the age of 11, I started a kids party business with my brother, with the help of our father. Together, we created “The Party Kids” our own brand and company which offered interactive and engaging entertainment for kids parties. This taught me how entrepreneurship can be a very valuable skill and also significantly boosted my confidence speaking in front of people from a very young age.
I think the opportunity to attend university would be extremely helpful as it gives me a chance to refine my skills and expand my knowledge in an educational environment. University will allow me to learn from industry experts, collaborating with other students who share my passions for media and continue to build my professional portfolio that showcases my abilities. I also believe university is an important step toward independence, and I am very excited to have the challenge of balancing my academics along side personal responsibilities. Managing my own schedule and finances is something that I’m quite used to, however I feel moving away from home and being completely independent will help me grow as an individual while preparing me for the responsibilities of living alone and a professional career.
