Journey

Initial mind map of journey

We were asked to create a mind map as to what we believed was a journey and the different types of journeys that there are. In this mind map we put many different types of journeys such as physical journeys (history, start/finish, etc.) and mental journeys (suffering, memory, etc.). I believe that we did this as a way to help get us thinking of what we could focus our choices on for the project. In doing this i created another mind map so that i could get more options on what i wanted to do for my project.

Another mind map of journey

In this mind map I focus in on journeys that i would want to do for the project and the initial ideas for the different themes. In this mind map i wanted to focus at the different journeys that i thought would be interesting to explore ideas on further. I also did quick sketches of my initial thoughts about these themes. In the end i decided to go with personal journey and how the changes in that journey. I wanted to do this mind map so that instead of choosing a theme for the first mind map and not having any idea what to do for it, i choose to do the second mind map so that i could do the thing that interests me the most and have other ideas for the other themes as well had i chosen them.

Initial sketches of characters

After deciding to do personal journey and change i decide to do a change in the things that i like and watched/read a a child and what i watch/read now. I started this idea because it shows that i have changed and that i have been on a journey from what i liked when i was a child to what i enjoy now. I sketched the character that i enjoyed the most. After the sketches i decided that i would base my project on the style of Mona the vampire. I wanted to base my project on the style of Mona the vampire as i believe that it is a very unique style to other cartoons an would be interesting to develop further.

Initial sketch of Tomie (Junji Ito)

After i had done the sketches of the characters i watched/read as a kid i wanted to do a sketch of the things i watch/read now to show the journey and progression from then to now and decided that i would do Tomie by Junji Ito. I have wanted to do a piece inspired by Tomie for awhile so i got the idea to do Tomie for this piece to show the journey of personal change. I think that doing Tomie for this project would be good as there is a lot of experimenting that can be done with the way that Tomie is designed.

Mood board

The mood board has images of what has inspired my ideas for this project as it shows the shows/books that I watched/read when I was younger and what I enjoy now. This also shows the pieces that have inspired my work being Mona the vampire and Tomie.

ARTIST RESEARCH

SONIA HOLLEYMAN’S MONA THE VAMPIRE.

Sonia Holleyman is the illustrator and writer of the book series Mona the Vampire. She created the first Mona book in 1990 then made the tv show which became more popular than the books. Holleyman has inspired my work as I will be creating a character based on the style of the characters in the show and books as I believe that the style is unique to the characters from Mona the Vampire.

Junji Ito’s Tomie

Junji Ito is the writer and illustrator of Tomie. Ito made the character tome in 1987 where it was published in a magazine named ‘monthly halloween’ and would continue to be published in the magazine until 2000. Ito has inspired my work as I have been enjoy his horror mangas and Tomie has been one of my favourites so far as I enjoy the way that she is designed and how the attached head looks and I believe that it would be good to be inspired by. This has inspired my work as I will be doing an attached head on my piece.

Jannike Viveka’s work

Jannike Viveka is a Swedish photographer who does a majority of horror pieces and horror self portraits. Viveka has inspired my work as I am inspired by how she uses normal ideas and manages to make them into a horror theme. The work above has inspired my project as I like the idea of making many irises in one eyeball and making them look in different directions to create an uncomfortable feeling for the person looking at the image.

PROPOSAL

WORKSHOPS/INDEPENDANT WORK

I have decide that for the background I would have eyes. I have decided to do this as it eyes are always looking at people so if i do eyes for the background it is as if the eyes are watching me and watching me grow into a different person than what i use to be. As the photos progress i have decided to make the eyes more deranged and horror-like as the pictures go on to show the difference from what i use to see people as to what i see them as now when they look at me. If I were to change anything or do anything again I would take pictures of more people’s eyes in the photo studio so I had more options for the eyes. I’ve used images such as flowers, skies, trees, etc. to see what different images would come out as. I have also created images by using the paint tool on photoshop.

I went on a physical journey to Leeds to help get some ideas for what i could do my journey project on. When i was travelling to Leeds i went by train and took a few photos while i was waiting for the train and whilst i was on the train as well.

I did this to show the different types of journeys’ whether it be a physical journey like this one, a mental journey or a personal journey.

I created a journey with this piece by making a journey with ink and how the ink flows. By using my finger and the end of a pencil I used them to move the ink around. In the piece I made two people with their heads attached together which links into my final piece with the attached head. I also created little creatures that I perceive to be parasites and I created the by using my finger to create the bodies then using the end of the pencil to make swirly lines to be legs. I wanted the parasites to be near the faces as I thought it would be as if the parasites were trying to get to the heads so they can live there and feed on them.

These being the heads and the parasites

I created this after listening to 3 different songs and just drawings what I thought of when hearing these songs.

At first the pictures kept coming out black/dark grey. After changing the brightness, the image started to show, but was still a little dark so we changed the brightness again. The image was now showing so I started to do different techniques with the images, such as painting the developer on and solarisation. I also painted the developer on and then did solarisation on the same image. If I were to do the dark room again I would make sure that one the images I choose wouldn’t be to dark, that way the brightness wouldn’t have to be changed and I could have moved the images around and the images would still be there without the image being black.
