Initial assessment-what inspires me

There have been many things that inspired many but a key topic that has inspired me is mental health. This is a thing that is being talked about a lot throughout the community of people and we need to make sure that we look after ourselves. Information was gathered from Mind.com. How common are mental health problems?.

It is stated that 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year. But the it says 1 in 6 people report experiencing a common mental health problem (like anxiety and and depression) in any given week in England.

Here are the specific diagnoses which are grabbed in any given week in England

  1. Mixed anxiety and depression- 8 in 100 people have had one of these two.
  2. Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) – 6 in 100 people
  3. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)- 4 in 100 people
  4. Depression- 3 in 100 people
  5. Phobias- 2 in 100 people
  6. Obsessive- compulsive disorder- (OCD)- 1 in 100 people
  7. Panic disorder- Fewer than 1 in 100 people.

A persons diagnosis may change several times during their life. Some complex conditions are measured by how many people will be given this diagnosis over the course of their lifetime, or in any given year:

  1. Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD)- 3 in 100 people (In their lifetime)
  2. Bonder line personality disorder (BPD) 2 in 100 people (in their lifetime)
  3. Bipolar disorder- 2 in 100 people (in their lifetime)
  4. Psychotic disorders (including schizophrenia)- fewer then 1 in 100 people (in any given year).

But estimates for these diagnoses can vary quite a lot. Also, personality disorder and schizophrenia are controversial diagnoses. These labels can be stigmatising . And many people feel that they shouldn’t be used at all.

Suicidal thoughts and self-harm.

Suicidal thoughts and self-harm aren’t mental health diagnoses. But they are related to mental health. Over the course of someone’s life.

1 in 5 people have suicidal thoughts

1 in 14 people self harm

1 in 15 people attempt suicide.

Woman are more likely to have suicidal thoughts and make suicidal attempts than men. But men are 3 times more likely to take their own life than women.

The 2014 survey that many of these figures come from only looked at people who were:

  1. aged 16 and over
  2. living in private housing
  3. living in England

This excludes lots of groups of people for example, theses figures do not include people who are:

  1. in hospitals
  2. in prisons
  3. in sheltered housing
  4. homeless or rough sleeping

So the true numbers are probably higher than these figures shown.

We’ve rounded the figures to the nearest whole number. You can find more detail in the original study.

how many people get treatment?

Reports from both England and Wales suggest that:

. Approximately only 1 in 3 adults with a common mental health problem are currently getting treatment in the form of taking therapies, medication or both.

. The most common treatment offered is psychiatric medication.
