Before working on a final project, I must decide on what I am actually going to do, and before even that, I must research the possibilities and potential inspirations. This research will guide me and assist in my decision making.
Leoni and I talked about potentially collaborating on a single/EP as we both know that creating music to release is definitely a potential route for us. One way for us to approach this is to play to our strengths, which could manifest in a song driven by keys/synths and bass. Leoni is most interested in pop music whereas I’m more interested in genres that are a bit left of centre, this could either mean we have no chemistry or we come up with something really interesting. One genre I suggested we can look at is “citypop”, a somewhat niche genre which originated in Japan in the late ’70s and the ’80s, taking influence from a variety of sources such as jazz, funk, latin, and much more. One album from this genre which I love is Takako Mamiya’s “Love Trip”; it makes for very easy listening and includes a groovy mix of synths and basslines.
One album suggested by Nic for us to listen to is Air’s “Moon Safari”; a 43 minute wander through ambient sounds with an emphasis on keys and bass, with notable inclusions of vocals and field recordings.
