Before going into Project 2, it is key that I recognise how things went for me in the first project so I can understand my strengths and weaknesses to work at a higher level. I have reviewed the written feedback I’ve been given and laid out my thoughts.
Context – Detail is something that would help me on my way to the next grade, as it was rather inconsistent; for my presentation I wasn’t short on detail (although I did only analyse one performance), however, when it came to the job roles or responsibilities section it was quite bare bones. I must include more examples as these can better show my understanding.
Research – Similarly, detail is an area for improvement, which includes researching, adding more examples, and looking to various sources. Also, I should relate my research more to my work, showing an understanding of how it applies to myself and the project.
Practical Skills – I did well considering I had such little time to learn bass, but I need to study the instrument much more, learning my fretboard, memorising scales, as well as understanding what is good practice for a bassist. However in Project 2, I won’t necessarily be working with a bass as it is all about songwriting and composition. What I can do is learn in a more dedicated way, spending more of my own time looking into the practical skills required and, of course, evidencing this in a more extensive fashion.
Evaluation/Reflection – I could maybe do with adding some variety to my evaluations, I have only given written evaluations thus far so it could be worth thinking about audio evaluations, as it could allow me more freedom to explain my thought processes. This combined with clear, defined targets could improve my grade.
Live Performance – Rehearse as much as possible, work with different strumming patterns and rhythms to enhance my performances, making them more interesting.
General Feedback – Improve documentation, include more evidence of work completed. When it comes to listening to the songs, include that as research. Research and reference a variety of sources. In evaluations, add strategies to improve so I know how to work to a higher level in the future.
What is Project 2?
Project 2 surrounds songwriting and composition. We will be studying a variety of musical practices, understanding them, and utilising what we have learnt in order to create at least three of our own compositions. As such there are three categories we will be working in: composing for moving image, electronically realised composition, and songwriting.
In this project we will learn how to use two new softwares – Logic Pro for our moving image composition as well as Ableton Live for our electronically realised composition. To evidence this work I will use screenshots, more audio files, and with any luck releasing my finished works to streaming services.
