Mixing – Sex On fire

I have mixed my own version of King of Leon’s song titled “sex on fire”. The biggest problem I had to overcome while mixing this track is my unfamiliarity with both mixing instruments, and mixing as a whole on Logic Pro X.

I managed to EQ all the instruments, along with some basic noise gating to make sure there was no bleeding of other instruments through the mic’s, and panning the drums overheads to their respective left and right locations. I then added some amps and distortion to the counter melody and the other strumming guitar, to make them punch through the mix and add a unique element, along with also panning them to the sides to allow the main guitar to have the spotlight in the middle.

Vocals were a little easier for me, as that is what I am most experienced in with mixing vocals for around a year now in FL Studio. I managed to add some basic compression to the vocals, in order to have all the vocals the same sound with nothing peaking or clipping in comparison to the instruments. Compression is important as it allows you to have more control over the volume of the vocals, and avoid them being really quite when the singer is, and then ear piercing when they start being louder. I also did an EQ on the singer, cutting off her low frequencies at around 150khz, and adding some basic reverb onto the vocals. I also added a cool effect using reverse reverb onto the vocals, using an automation clip to have the bus only send during the chorus, the reason of this was to fill the empty spaces between vocals.

I also added a little cool build up in the song closer to the last chorus, in order to build up more suspense and make the last chorus feel like the finale of the song, and leaving the best till last.

the guitar amps I used for this mix on the counter melody guitars along with the strumming. Both panned.
