Mixing – Snake Eyes

I mixed the level 3 band “Indecisive”‘s newest single, Snake Eyes. I first started by getting all the stems into logic and creating a rough draft of the panning and the levels should look like. This would help me tackle what needed EQ’ing to remove bad frequencies and sounds, and how to clear up space and leave it sounding less muddy and clashing.

Here is my mix of their song;

Next off I started by adding some basic noise gating to all the instruments that could have spilling; The drum kit as a whole. The drum kit usually has a lot of spilling because of how close the mics and different components are to each other. this gating helps keep the noises clean of which instrument we want to come through.

To help give the song more diversity and character to it, I decided to add guitar amps to all 3 guitars in the song along with the bass guitar. This was used to separate the sounds from each other and make them sound like different guitars; even when using the same setup and guitar. This helps to slow clear indication of what part of the song it is to the listener.

Some of the instruments in the song are played loudly at some parts and very quiet at others, to combat this and bring the same sound for all I chose to automate the volume on the tracks; Mainly the piano and the guitar. I chose this over compression as the automation allows for a lot more self control over the volume specifically.
