This is what the composition for my video game soundtrack looks like its very short just around a minute long but just right for the way is develops and sounds throughout . I have a couple of sections I have an intro, then kind of a chorus with a lead retro synth on top and a outro at the end. Its very short but sweet I did not add any drums on this track as I tried to add drums to it but I did not like the way it sounds so I decided to not add any drums. I believe this track doest really need either way its still very tense and sounds the way I wanted it to sound so
this is what is being played in the beginning its a arpeggio with 3 notes I played as a retro synth on a midi keyboard I wrote this arpeggio by just messing around on a piano I was looking for something that sounds very dark but video game like as-well this arpeggio was perfect for my idea so I went through with it. I used a retro synth and used a lot of treble and bass with a very fast attack to add the suspension and a bit of that intensity since this soundtrack is for a boss fight.
After I wrote that arpeggio I wanted to add chords on top of it so I fiddled around the keyboard again o find the right chords as I made this whole soundtrack by ear and know nothing about music theory. The chords I added on top of the arpeggio made the sound track sound so much darker and intense I found the chords for the arpeggios whilst I was at home on my keyboard it was also that day where i composed the next part of the sound track the chorus.
The chorus is just the chords I used in the intro but I played them as arpeggios and added a lead retro synth on top of it which is a very simple melody I found within a couple of minutes it plays roughly 8 bars.
These are all of the instruments I used I used a pretty big texture with retro synth piano, brass, strings and a choir.
I added all of these instruments as I wanted the soundtrack to sound orchestral as the boss in the game is a king. but it doesn’t really because its made or a video games but it is still a very good selection of instruments that create a very nice texture. I panned some instruments as you ca see because multiple instruments are played on top of each other I also chose to do orchestral sound as compositions are mostly orchestral and I wanted to give it that cinematic feeling it also makes it twice as more dramatic.
This is what the chorus looks like it plays for just around 8 bars I added two different a lead retro synths on top of it one plays one plays for four bars and the other for another four bars. One melody plays for four bars and the other does aswell. The lead retro synths on top add so much more character and colour to this soundtrack. After this little chorus section it finishes off with a very dramatic section with brass a choir a mellow synth and a string section acting as a lead. I believe the ending for this soundtrack is perfect.
This is what setting I used for my retro synth I first put my filter at nearly 500 as I liked the way it sounds. On the Amp ENV I made the attack very fast as I did not like the delay with a very slow attack. All of my retro synths are on sawface as I did not like he other settings and did not fit well with my main idea for the soundtrack.
This is what I did for my brass I don’t really remember what I did for this unfortunately I just know I was looking for a specific attack and colour of the brass. I just messed around with all the settings until I found it.
All my other retro synths were premade pre-sets which is what I need to work on. I need to learn how to use the settings on a retro synths to find the sound I want to have I can do this by watching videos on YouTube which explain to me how to fully use it.
This is what my soundtrack ended up sounding like.
I really like this soundtrack and am genuinely satisfied with the way it turned out. I like the texture of instruments I used and the melodies I came up with. What I really like about this soundtrack are the chords I used during the chorus They get the sound I was exactly looking for. As I said overall I really like this soundtrack and the way it turned out one thing I need to work on is learning how to use the retro synths so I do not have to use premade sounds and can make my own.
