Hallmark cards produce greetings cards for all different kinds of celebrations globally, as well as expanding toward ornaments and gifts too.
Who is their Target Audience?
The target audience of Hallmark cards tends to be adults, more specifically middle-aged people, as they are the most likely of the different age groups to purchase cards for events and celebrations. This can be told through the chosen style of comedy on a majority of their cards, a style reminiscent in TV shows and memes made by and for said demographic. This same comedic style is also seen in their cards allegedly for teenagers, however you can still tell that the person they’re really trying to sell to is of that same age. The cards follow stereotypical humor of teenagers, mocking the stereotype of teenagers constantly on their phones, gaming and in their rooms a sense of humor not really favored by the teenagers the cards are supposed to be for, but the adults in their lives that would be purchasing them. This is intentional, as they are trying to earn money from said adults purchasing the cards for
What different types of Comedy are there?
There are several subtypes of comedy, however there are 3 main types that are commonly used: stand up comedy, sketch comedy and improvisational comedy. Stand up comedy is a specific form of comedy in which the comic will perform a routine in front of a live audience. Sketch comedy consists of scripted skits, often seen in sitcom series. Improvisational comedy is unrehearsed skits and bits performed for either a live or at-home audience. In our piece, we used sketch comedy, as we had revised a situational comedy piece about teachers in a staff lounge and students in detention. This research helped me form a greater understanding of the differing subtypes of comedy and allowed me to pitch in to the creation of our piece.
Which style of Comedy are we using & Why?
For our piece, we are using sketch comedy. This piece is defined as sketch comedy because it consists of multiple skits and jokes based in a specific situation. We chose to do sketch comedy because it was agreed upon that we all found it to be the most appealing of the subtypes, as well as something we believed would be captivating and entertaining for our audience.
What is the piece about?
Our sketch took place in a teacher’s lounge in which high school staff members discuss the goings-on of their working lives, such as their pupils misbehavior, the English teacher’s maternity leave and the recent absence of a former teacher. The scene opens up to the headteacher, Mr. Cooper giving a tour to the newest member of staff, Miss Kilduff, who would at the school as a temporary replacement for Miss Blake during her maternity leave. Miss Kilduff’s character was proposed to be a teacher from America who was particularly overzealous about her new job, unintentionally coming across as annoying to her colleagues, entertaining the audience through relatable humor. Another main plot point comprised of Lexi, a cheerleader who was pregnant, looking for the P.E. teacher. This implied that he was involved in some way, this was an example of subtle dark humor.
What experience are you gaining from this task?
I gained a greater understanding of sketch comedy and comedy as a whole. This is due to the amount of research I conducted on our client and the subject of comedy to assist my contributions to my company.
How will this task help you in the future?
I will take the knowledge I have gained on teamwork and script writing to further my abilities in said fields in my future projects. I will have to work very closely with all of my peers in future projects and work on focus, which this project has assisted the build-up of my skills in.
Who is your target audience?
Our target audience is mostly teenagers and young adults, as it is mostly relatable for people who are in high school (therefore relevant to their lives) or people who were in there not too long ago, as it is still fresh in their minds however they are able to look back on how ridiculous some of it was.
