Project 3: Evaluation & Viva

Evaluation

´What progress has been made?

I believe I have made progress in my confidence, as I often struggle with allowing myself to put my all into performing out of fear of looking like a fool in front of so many people. However, by being given the opportunity to try new and challenging things in class surrounded by people I trust, I have found that the things I was afraid of doing aren’t actually so bad. The best teacher I’ve ever had taught me that if you’re not embarrassing yourself a little bit then you’re holding yourself back; this is some of the best advice I have ever been given and really helped me adapt my outlook on performing.

´What skills have you developed?

I believe that being permitted to make minor mistakes and being able to do retakes helped me develop a greater skill of line memorization; I was able to get lines right quicker without having to do many takes compared to previous performances, being given that opportunity allowed for me to adjust to the mental preparation that goes into memorizing lines and actions whilst off script. I feel that allowing myself to make mistakes and quickly correcting myself before a performance allows me to memorize my lines quickly as the mistakes stick in my mind and help me recall the correct lines, as well as the fact that not lingering on the mistake too long prevents me from getting caught up in the fault and allows me to stick with my train of thought.

VIVA Questions

Name: Ollie Lloyd

  • How do you feel this project went? I feel that this project went well, despite that I was ill for the majority of its production.
  • What skills do you feel you have developed throughout this project? I feel that I have developed my confidence in performing throughout project 3.
  • What were your key strengths in project 3? I think that my strength in project 3 was memorizing lines; in the original script, before we decided to cut it down, I had more lines than I usually have in most performances and with my long absence, it was challenging yet I still managed to memorize the entire thing in time.
  • What were the weaknesses in project 3? I think my biggest weakness in project 3 was my absence. I couldn’t really help it, but it pushed me back a lot and made the performance very difficult.
  • How effectively did you manage the overall process? I believe that I managed the overall process decently given how much time I had off.
  • Can you discuss any key research sources which have supported your process? The most vital research source was the initial episode the script originated from as it allowed me to get a grasp on how the characters were intended to be played, what they looked like, how they spoke, etc.
  • How effectively did you apply the research? I applied this research effectively by attempting to imitate Craig’s sardonic humor and his tone whilst speaking of different subjects.
  • What have you learnt from this project which you will take forward on to the next step of your own personal development? I have learned the subtle differences between stage acting and TV acting, as well as the differing forms of development each of them require.
  • What have you learnt about the topic of screen acting? I have learned that screen acting feels a lot more natural; at times you even forget that you’re filming something, which I think adds to the essence of the performance and makes it feel more raw and grounded, like the characters are real people.
  1. What can you do now that you couldn’t do when you started the course? I can more comfortably perform in front of a camera now, whereas before the course I hated it and couldn’t get over my nerves.
  2. Why is learning this important? Learning to become more comfortable acting in front of a camera is important if you wish to go into such an industry, which I intend to if I’m able. If you couldn’t get yourself to perform in front of a camera, you wouldn’t be able to submit auditions or even participate in the projects themselves.
  3. If you were to do the project again what would you do differently? I think if I were to do the project again I would leave the script unedited since we ended up having more time than we originally thought; if I had known this, I would like to keep the rest of it as it was my favorite part of performing since it had some really funny scenes.
  4. How will you effectively apply this within your next project? I will apply my newfound comfortability of being filmed while performing to the auditions I will have to do for my next project and the project following too since our auditions are recorded.
  5. Did you enjoy the rehearsal process? I enjoyed the rehearsal process.
  6. Set yourself a target for project 4:
  1. For project 4, I would like to apply myself more and challenge myself with a bigger, more involved role.
  1. Set yourself a target for your scrapbook for project 4:
  1. I hope to stay on track with my scrapbook for project 4 instead of procrastinating and leaving it all until the last minute.
