Project 3: Planning & Production

Set

For project 3, we had done TV acting and it was filmed in a recording studio. Because of this, we already had some things in there to use for the set. We had used two long couches placed facing each other, split up by a wooden coffee table in between. These set pieces were used in a way in order to emulate the look of a booth at a café or diner, which was the approximate setting of the scene.

Lighting

For lighting, we had used dim, warm lighting in order to give off the same atmosphere that you get from eating out at a café/diner late at night, just before closing time when it’s dark outside and the lights only just keep the place bright. Of course we couldn’t make it as dark as we’d have liked, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to see us, however I think it worked out anyway.

Sound

For sound, we had a microphone hidden to the sides of the coffee table in the middle in order to record our dialogue clearly. I think this worked rather well, as you were able to hear us adequately without any background noise, yet you couldn’t see the microphone and risk breaking immersion.

Costume

When it came to my costume, I had dressed in red pants, black shoes and a black polo shirt. I based this costume on the men in my life that are of Craig’s age, often wearing polo shirts and jeans to meals that are supposed to be a little fancy but not fancy enough to require a suit; I already had a black polo shirt, but decided that my usual pants, black combat pants, would have been out of place as they did not match the idea of “smart casual middle-aged man” in my head, as well as the fact that I didn’t really want to wear all black as it felt sort of boring. So I looked for my red jeans in order to add a pop of color.

Props

The only prop we used was the bill itself, a McDonald’s receipt we had on hand to act as the receipt for the café/diner the men were dining at.
