Lino: Stamps ✓

To further my experimentation with linoleum, I decided to create stamps with linoleum and use them to create unique prints. To create the stamps, I carved small designs into the lino and carved them out. I cut the linoleum after carving them with scissors to separate the stamps.

When gathering the linoleum sheets to carve the lino print designs, I found some old scraps of linoleum. I decided to reuse those old scraps to carve my stamps. This is a good choice for the environment since it means fewer scraps that will end up being thrown away into landfills.

To test the stamps out before using them, I used them on these sheets of black paper, I tested out each stamp, as well as testing them when I wanted to see how each colour would look, or to see if I added too much ink to the stamps.

These two prints that i made came out really well. I love the designs, as well as the colour choices. I love how the shapes look overlapped so I want to experiment with that when designing my final piece.

i asked those around me which one looked better, and I got mixed results. Here are the pro’s of each print.

Blue with multiple shapes:

  • “Good colour”
  • “Great mix of shapes”
  • “Neater shapes”
  • “Reminded them of me”

Yellow + orange squares:

  • “Nice blend of colours”
  • “Great texture on the squares”
  • “Has a nice, consistent pattern”

From these responses, I think I’ll use multiple different stamps if I do this for my final piece, which I am considering. However, I do like the way I used multiple colours for the square piece. So, I think I’ll consider doing the same for my final piece.
