Culture project Proposal

•Explain your theme/concept around CULTURE?

My theme for the culture project in Caribbean food and drinks such as ginger beer (non alcoholic drink),goat water, jerk chicken, salt fish and dumpling. I think that using my background would a great way to turn Monserrat and Jamaican food into art.

•How does your theme/concept “reflect something that you consider to be part of your culture?

I’m currently doing food as my theme. Food is mostly linked into tradition like e.g., Christmas.I have done work about food and drinks that are related to my Caribbean culture.

•How have you generated/developed ideas?

I have done my ink task when I had the draw in my sketchbook with pencil with my non dominant hand and go over it with my dominant hand in ink, I like doing this process and it makes your artwork abstract when adding water colour paint.

•Which artists have you researched and how have they influenced and inspired you?

The artist can Kenneth Harris has inspired me to use Caribbean food as my theme I am planning an art piece using watercolour paint. am currently doing Caribbean food as my theme and this links in with Kenneth Harris’s work.

•What other research have you done?

I have researched about Monserrat best dishes are goat and favoured drinks are ginger beer. I have found Caribbean food artists such as Dominica Alcantara, Nicole Jean Lois and Kenneth Harris who are Caribbean food artists.

•What materials, techniques and processes do you intend using?

I want to use water colour because ľ’m weak at watercolour and I want to improve and sharpen my skills.

•How do you intend to test and experiment with your ideas?

I intend to do multiple water colour paint work of different food and drinks. Then will find my best work and use it a reference for my final piece. (I have changed my techniques before I did my final piece.I have used markers in my final piece)

i did this ink tasks at the start of the project

this is a Caribbean drink called sorreal and it is on a ledge next to a water fall and some trees but the colour bled

This the sorreal drink i did with ink with my left hand and went over with my right hand

Goat water ink task

This is another ink work i did with same method but i added coloured markers to this to make look better.

Mood board/culture

this is a mood board i made with different caribbean foods like beef patty salt fish, rice and peas, goat water, salt fish and dumpling.

Dominica Alcantara artists research.

i drew both of Dominica Alcantara’s pieces of work. In two different styles.I prefer the bottom the bottom one because i have added mangos in a basket with a water melon on a fence while there is sugar canes behind the man in the drawing.

The one thing i like about the drawing at the top left because of the colours and you can see the man cutting some bread fruit and the remain of the sliced bread fruit is one the floor.

i think i should improve more on the first one because it was lacking tone and shades. Also Dominica Alcantara uses paint all in their work.

Dominica Alcantara paints Manuel the fruit vendor into there work and most of they’re work Manuel’s face is mostly covered.

Caribbean food and drink drawing

I drew three Jamaican beef patties and with every colour i have added i have wrote the name for them for an example bronze, rose baige dark yellow, marigold and etc in markers.

I also drew a drink called “bigga soda” but the effects from the last page was shown through this page and made the drawing look a bit weird.

and I drew a pear and a mango countertop personally i think i need more improvement on on colour and i shouldn’t have put the pencil lines in my drawing.

Template drawing for final piece.

I decided to not do one of Dominica Alcantara’s work as my final piece but i wanted to test out how if i could mix two of my pieces of work together to see what would be the outcome

I made templates of my final piece of a ginger beer(non alcoholic drink)mixed with a jamaican beef patty and used it s a template. and think it came out pretty good i did both templates in different style and i liked the one the right more than the left but originally i was planning to use water colour I changed my mind and decided to use markers instead

final piece for culture project

In this final piece i did a beef patty is leaning of the glass the glass of ginger beer and a lime on the rim of the glass

I like everything about this final piece i wouldn’t change much about it i think i could use my final piece as a poster to advertise caribbean food to a target audience of teens

The one thing i would change about this is the outline on the inside of the lime .

I personally like the calligraphy i used for the title to show to tourists that caribbean food can be appealing.

gifs work

i really like this gif workshop i did because i use photos make the photos move in different direction

evaluation

  • I have used coloured markers and the techniques i have used in my final piece was layering and cross hatching. have added layers to the drink, background and the patty aswell.
  • I have done research about an artist such as Dominica Alcantara i have drawn fruits and a person called Manuel the fruit vendor that cutting breadfruit.
  • i had one problem with my 3d work because it went missing it was wooden rings and wire attaching from one ring to another.
  • the one thing that has impacted on my project is my work is the fact that my 3d work has not being found.
  • I have made a change a to my final piece that i was not going to use watercolour but i was going to use markers instead because it was appealing to me
  • I think that my proposal links to my theme because i haven’t changed my theme but the technique i was planning to use for my final piece
  • I have found that planning and drawing my templates was very effective because it helped me a lot to figure out how to do this project
  • i think that gif making was one of my new skills i have learned in this project so far
  • i think i could further improve on my artist research, mood board and planning.
