Journey

project journey

Proposal journey-

My theme for this project is past present and future. At first, I was confused in what to do because there were quite a few ideas in mind like Northern lights or hot air balloon or there were emotions etc., by the end of this I decided to ‘past present and future.’ Within this theme I solely decide to go with time as it goes well with my concept and as I have searched a lot on secondary research which led me to this, I used Pinterest and created a mood board. Most images of work show spiral sort of staircase type time theme, to me shows the sort of struggle and achievements and other emotions on emotions on this output of pictures but also shows the growth as time goes by and in the end, there will be none. Therefore, it implies that time is precious and shows how it is used depending on the person. However personally to me it is the hardships, sadness/ loss of someone, outcome of overcoming situations and what lies ahead waiting for us. Before deciding on a concept/theme I had done research on to work about journey and came across time, this intrigues me by the spiral and shows mystery like a puzzle and the infinite of the ending as it goes on and on just as time does ensuring that it was my concept at the end of it. I have chosen two artists that relate to my theme-

Mary Heilman- because her are to do with ‘past present and future,’ her work also consists of texture and colors she even uses her hands to create this in her works.

Bill viola- he uses a lot of technology in his work like electronics, sounds etc and his work called Nantes triptych that relates to my concept. `

These influences by the way they uphold their artworks like Mary her lines and textures and structure as bill shows process of birth, growth, and death, both show this ‘past present and future.’ implying time is precious and limited.

I did primary research at the start of the project as we listened to three pieces of music about journey and drew what we thought about in charcoal and the other one is with ink and using whatever to create these marks. I have done a group mind map and a visual mind map including one surrounding my theme. I have Done secondary research including my artist research and mood board and create quite a few experiments to help see where my final piece would lead me to and outcomes of them in case it does not work. For this project I would want to do things like proposal, research etc on time and save time to experiment to see different outcomes, overall, this project will hopefully be better than the last, but I will be doing mix media throughout this project. I did a search site for the exhibition of this project, and it was the library, unfortunately there is not a lot of spacing, so I decided to put my final piece on the winder with Aser tape so light can through. For my final piece I am planning to do another digital but using inks and mark making as I think it would look nice on the window showing through the assorted colours in the light with over laying with my design of theme on to A1/A2 or series of A3 on acetate. In conclusion, this project will hopefully be better than the last and I will be able to experiment for my final piece. As a result, my specialist industry may be mixed media as I try all workshops like printing, digital etc.

class mind storm

visual mind map

my own theme mind map

this was my place to put my final pieces on the window

this was my backup plan incase it does not work the window idea

mood board

research

primary research

i used inks on this with different colours, using my hands and other tools like a pencil, paint brush etc. i enjoyed this and think it came out well its like your free to run your imagination and do whatever comes in your mind.

this is the first task we did, so we listened to three pieces of music which were related to journey and drew what we felt or thought. i was entertained with the textures of the chalk, but wish i had more time to draw something better as we were on a timer.

this is what we didi lastly to create with on adobe, i took a picture on in Bradford city park of the clock tower as it was what my theme was. i use the magic eraser tool to dissolve the white parts, then pressed command A, command C and finally command V, using opacity to show both images. this is the photo i used and how it came out

we did another workshop

using this i over lay the building and the typography to create this

i enjoyed as i inputed varies of effects like curves, although at first was hard to do but got the hang of it and would do it again.

i experimented on this one to see how it turned out and came out good, but prefer the other one as it shows more colours and textures and so are these

you can see the shape and lines and colours that i did using photoshop

Darkroom

i went to the dark room, using the printed tracing papers of negative and positive typography and the image of the picture that i have took

using this to overlay and position them differently, some came out good however at the starting the setting was different which made the photogram black instead of the images. overall, they rest came out good and would do it again as i find new ways to add to it.

these are the ones. that came out wrong
these came out better than the first ones
these are position differently

photoshop- using the techniques from before and the dark room photograms and experimented and this is how it turned out

i did well it digitally to create these and will be for my final piece.

this was a task to do with time

this one is my own idea as i did for this task

printing

i did lino printing , using the image from my mood board to to do this. at first the lino came wrong because i was cutting it too deep so i did it again, but i still used for printing plain side.

the wrong one but used the other side though
this is the image i related it to and how my work came out

i would do this agin with longer time as time was very quick for this

embroidery

this came out bad as i did not have time and and my drawing was hard to do as result i tried a flower but still was hard to do. i cant remember the stitch name but its a bit like the backward stitch one.

heat press

for this we used inks and the heat press required safety so the technician did it for us because of health and safety reasons.

wote the annotations other way round

this is the way its supposed to be
this was to be black but came out a bit lighter than expected

tried a different fabric but came out a better than the first because there is colour as well.

for my final pieces i decided to do it digitally and print of in acetate, using the same techniques previously before to create these. although i was nervous on it turned out because i did not really have a back up plan, but they came out better than i imagined. throughout this process was very interesting and interactive for me as i found new ways to do it, i am glad to say that the pieces came out splendid.

this how it looked on the window, unfortunately the windows were not as clear as the library ones so once its put up in the library they will come out better than these ones.

final evaluation

Final evaluation – journey

My theme for this project is “past, present and future.”

My specialist practice is mix media this is because I can do a range of workshops like printing, digital etc along with using different media. Throughout this this project I have shown that my is related to the concept of my theme “past, present and future” to the workshops that I have done like lino printing I had related to one of the images that I had got from Pinterest.

As I had researched on “past, present and future” a lot of the images of work showed time, so I decided to solely work on time. I researched upon

Mary Hellmann- her work relates to my theme and on top of that textures she does in her artwork like using her fingers. Which I did do for my mark making using other tools also as well.

Bill viola- an American contemporary video artist, uses technology like electricity and sound, this relates to my theme because he uses human experiences such as birth, growth, and death in a timely manner.

In my last project I was no able to do primary research but have managed to do it for this project.

Throughout this project I the skills that I have used are printings, embroidery, and photoshop including darkroom, mark making.  I tried to find ways that will lead me to a final piece and experimenting which things are best used like for mark making I used my fingers and tools such as toothbrush, paint brush even the big paint brush and a scrub like brush to create my mark makings. I had a bit of a problem when I was trying to stich as I had drawn on the fabric which related to my theme but was hard as I had to practice it, even so I drew flower instead and did it.  I did have another problem though that was for final piece I wanted to size up to A1 on acetate, unfortunately it was costly so I decided to do a series of three on A3 acetate as that was the range it could go up to. There was not much health, safety elements only the heat press as it can be extremely hot if we are not careful while handling it. For my final piece I have decide to use my darkroom photograms and created more mark makings to create different textures and will be displaying them on the windows, I will using double sided tape to stick them up by presenting them in a line as the window is huge but are divided individually, I did  have a backup plan in case the window idea didn’t work although I did test it out one to see how it would look like. In my last project I did not experiment to see the outcome but for this project I have and have used my time for this project well enough to be able to have completed before the deadline. I am incredibly happy with my final pieces and how they have come out better than my expectations.
