After the first series of The Office in 2001 Ricky and Stephen Merchant returned to XFM Radio, An alternative London-based radio.
Due to the show’s popularity, Ricky was given his very own producer, Karl Pilkington.
Karl was hired to “Just press the buttons” but later on Ricky and Stephen got him more involved in the show over the subsequent weeks and soon Karl would talk about his unconventional childhood and ridiculous stories.
After the end of the first season, Karl became a crucial part of the show.
Animated series
The radio show became so popular that some of its broadcasts were turned into an animated series so that viewers could visualise some of the things Karl Pilkington was talking about, including Monkey News, The Diary of Karl Pilkington and more.
My favourite episode is “Clive Warren”. In this episode, Karl is pitching his movie idea, “A Love of Two Brains.” During his pitch, he mentions that he envisions Clive Warren in the lead role. However, it becomes clear that Karl has confused Clive Warren with the actor Clive Owen.
