This is an evaluation for my final project in composition. I will be evaluating my Logic X composition I have completed and uploaded to Soundcloud.
Throughout this project both programs have been as equally confusing at first. I had no initial concepts or direction I wanted to take with my logic work, and with this left a lot of confusion. The logic X software left me very unsure of myself, I had never played an instrument before; not even a piano, so when faced with the challenge of composing I had no idea what to do. One of the first problems I had was trying to decide what instruments I wanted to include, logic had so many options, and the majority of my first couple of weeks was spent trying out instruments and not making anything worthwhile, with what i did manage to create, it left me dissatisfied, and It was short and had no real structure. It didn’t click for me at first, and I believe its because I let the fact that I didn’t know how to play these instruments hold me back. I wasn’t allowing myself the chance, and I lacked the courage to actually step out of my comfort zone.
The instruments I chose were basic at first because I wanted to start easy, and my composition came together in one week, all the weeks previous I spent creating doubt, and just trying things out and not trying to make the best of out of what I knew. My concept fully came together when I remembered a couple of nights before that I had downloaded a piano app where I had experimented with making melodies, and I had grown to like a melody I created by focusing on the black keys of a piano, mixing low notes and high notes to create a basic melody that I was able to build upon. Most of the things I was able to produce came to me last minute, considering I just didn’t know how to go about making a composition, and overthinking and doubting myself only hindered my potential. I thought of basic instruments like pianos, guitars, and drums, And I was able to work with those musical instruments coming together.
There are parts of the song that needed to be cleaned up because they slightly go out of time in the end. But apart from that, I think I did pretty well in terms of my first musical composition. I would’ve liked to have a lot more time on this composition cause I had ideas to include a violin, but because it was pulled together in the last week I didn’t have a lot of time to expand by the time I knew what I was doing. The concept itself was repetitive, that’s why I want to add a violin in a higher octave and a different complimentary melody to create more variety because I depended on the same melody created by the piano create differentiation, and it worked for a little, but it would’ve been nice to include more if I had the time,
The title was made last second, and it honestly was just a random title that I came up with so I didn’t have to call it ‘faith’s composition’. Overall, I think my Sibelius composition had a lot more impact because the notes didn’t repeat as often as High Rise notes did. Not only that, Sibelius had a bit more planning, and a lot more time to work on it, and the music benefitted from the video when I presented it to my family which helped it become the more favourable composition rather than my Logic X composition.
