Introduction:-
I will mainly be covering the the recorded Music Industry that first established itself with Leon Scott back in 1857, where he created his first audio analysis tool that allowed him to record on a piece of paper the audio input it received. And in 1877, Thomas Edison built on Leon’s creation by creating a machine called a phonograph. This machine could both record and playback audio instantly using a thin metal cylinder. Eventually, the 78 Revolutions per minute shellac disks were able to intake four and a half minutes of music received through ribbons microphones. The ability for a band to play a particular composition using the sheet music for it lead to the focus of composers to be shifted to musicians, recording musicians became more sophisticated, Until Les Paul, in 1948, recorded the first sound-on-sound overdubbed, (or muiltitrack recording) with a track called ‘Lover (When you are with me)‘. Les Paul’s example showed that compositions no longer needed to be taken live and this opened up opportunities for Record labels who brought together the composers from the publishing industry, musicians from the live Industry, and created the Vinyl for the Recording Industry. These people were known as Artists or A&R Representatives who went to pick the successful artists we see today.
My thoughts/Opinion:-
I think in the past Century the music Industry has adapted rapidly, with the adaptations to machines, then to the creation of Phonographs, it solidified the creation of sheet music, and the ability to receive inputted Audio. Then they were able to to both record and and playback audio received, I think the Music Industry had adapted for the better, I don’t really have any negatives to talk about, Humans are constantly adapting and growing, and from the article I read provided, that was clearly shown throughout it all. I find it hard to criticise the music industry’s history because it showed the evolution, many would say to critise the beginning, but that’s exactly the point, it’s the beginning, it would be pointless from my point of view to critise it when it swiftly evolves overtime. The journey the music industry has lead us here in 2020, and music in this Century seems way more advanced with new devices, Music genres, Equipment, and that all came from the past, the past is positive to me, and I’m grateful for it, It shows how quickly we’ve adapted as an innovate species, and I think music being produced now is alot more professional, and Music has changed alot.
