Beth’s theme Analysis:- Project 2

My Initial thoughts of listening to Beth’s theme was the melancholy atmosphere that the music conveyed to me, Beth’s theme/motif was a focus on the character, and the loss of her son, and the journey and struggle is shown within this piece, you can feel the sadness in the music. The instruments recognised were piano, Violin, Chello, and Viola, all of these instruments created a crescendo, a slow build in the intro being a common feature of instrumental music. Establishing the texture of the music towards the end I was able to recognise the beginning and the endings symmetry. I also noticed the harmonic rythmn, initially I thought it was slow, and I were a bit indecisive but after learning about the diatonic rythmn we learned that “Dia” means within, and that the rythmn was actually fast, but the crescendo confuses the rythmn. Rubarto meaning “robbed time” established more expression within the music. The chords in Beth’s theme changes every single bar, and the simple instruments makes it easier to remember and the chords move to the next note but is always around the same harmony, this gives the chords movement. Overall I enjoyed this piece, It allowed me to stop and appreciate the moment, even with the narrative of the theme, instrumental music can leave to different interpretations because there’s no words, and that is the beauty of instrumental music, the freedom of expression, and that is something I live for.

I didn’t agree with what some if my classmates said,”that it didn’t appeal to them because it’s not their music” I see their point but that was not what the focus was about,it was a piece that allowed you to appreciate a different style of music, and stop and listen, for me it doesn’t matter that it wasn’t the point of it not suiting you’re style, it wasn’t about you as an individual, it to me was about allowing yourself to perceive and appreciate it for what the music was.
