All my grade 5 questions:

Performing in front of a large audience – I haven’t ever really had an opportunity to perform in front of a large audience but I was incredibly nervous to perform in front of cameras and the year above so I imagine that I’ll be even more nervous performing in front of people I can see and a lot of them too.

Being able to perform in different genres – I have only ever really learnt songs that are in Pop sounds so I should probably try another genre but I can’t say that I’d be good because I just haven’t ever attempted it.

Being able to read music notation – I still struggle with reading sheet music but I only just started reading it so ledger lines take me a long to work out and I have to pause to remember the acronyms.

Work out a melody bar by ear – I can’t work out the melody by ear yet because I’m not really sure where to start, I think maybe you have to find the right key by using your scales and then work out your basic riff or bass notes but I’m not entirely strong with my scales yet.

Read and write using music notation – I can’t read music notes yet so it is really hard to try and work out where they sit, although I am pretty good at writing music on the staff but the ledger lines confuse me. I also get unsure of what instruments can play chords, like violins etc normally play just 1 note but I didn’t know so I was writing chords that they can’t even play *chuckle noise*.

Peer feedback – Thomas:

To get better at performing in front of large crowds, perform to a small crowd and gradually increase in size and this way the differences are more subtle and you don’t feel as anxious.

To get better at different genres, try adding some new genres to a playlist and practice performing them when ever you can.

Find the key that works on the scales and practice to songs to see if you can work it out.

Try memorising the circle of fifths and use programs like Sibelius to improve your skills.
