The 70’s were when a lot of revolutionary development happened, such as the new found capability to have portable instruments.
Some legendary artists, such as Elton John, has such a huge impact on the industry that they’re still very iconic today. Elton John, for example, was so influential because of his unique style in blending pop and rock sounds together to form one piece of music. A snippet from his hit documentary, “Rocket Man”, also influenced many young, aspiring artists to keep working a music because he had taught himself piano and learned to play by ear, so at a very young age he was incredibly talented.
Genres such as Disco and Rock were very popular in the 70’s as they begun to evolve from the original sounds of just Jazz, R&B or Blues. Sounds like percussion began to expand as more artists dived into trialling new sounds.
As well as sound, fashion also saw a lot of development. More bright colours, army jackets, platforms, bell-bottom pants and silk-skirts became the “in” fashion of the era. This era was definitely one for bold statements as their fashion took more of a wild approach. For example, the tie-dye clothing became popular within the hippie community as they would tend to list to a lot of psychedelic music and their clothing kind of reflected the drugs affect.
Social issues like politics also held a lot of influence over the production of music, especially in Punk. Punk was very different from other genres because 1)they didn’t care for popularity and didn’t want to be mainstream but also because they were much more rebellious and called out a lot of thing’s that were wrong but not many people would speak on, especially within politics. Stereotypically, they’d have spiked hair, dark clothes and eye liner, studded leather jackets and just an overall wild appearance. Their music sounded quite sloppy and rugged with a lot of heavy drums and electric guitar. Their rebellion was best represented in their destructive music videos where they’d set fire to things and smash everything up.
Another huge and influential artist was Stevie Wonder. Stevie Wonder was a singer-songwriter and composer who was born blind. He wrote the master-piece and iconic “The Key Of Life” album. This album was the representation of life itself, a pretty big job that he composed incredibly well. He took all of his lives experiences and moulded them all into this album, that told the story of his whole life. Stevie Wonder helped in all aspects of creating the album, from producing, writing and performing the songs. This album took 2 and a half years to create yet was only worked on in 2 studios.
