Development of A Gambled Soul

This was the very first idea we had. We had the chords for the whole composition pretty much down, we had an idea of the strumming pattern that would follow the piano and we had the piano’s arpeggiation patterns pretty much done. From here, we needed to develop a structure and work on our timing together.

We started working on a structure and we decided that the piano should go round at least once on its own, to build on the atmosphere, and then come in with the guitar.

Playing through and discussing how long we’re looping each chord and fixing the structure.

Running through and discussing the structure. This video is when we decided that we defiantly wanted to include this Collab on my EP.

Developing the build up a little more. Isaac created the dramatic build up. We were just aligning up the chords we were both playing.

Play through of the whole piece that we had so far.

Stripped version, just the piano playing, birds eye view.

Discussing the structure and chords so that we’re both playing in time. Developing the idea further by seeing where else we can take the chord progression in terms of the patterns etc.

Practicing the build up section. Fixing weak parts, such as timing.

Whole piece that we have so far. Discussing where we want to take it next.

Discussing composing for strings too and aligning what chords we’re playing.

Solo piano play through so I can practice to it at home.

Discussing what accompaniments we want to write for.

Run through the sections we have so far.

Writing the guitar break up part and practicing going back into the other section.

Aligning our parts and running through sections.

Bounce’s:

This track is in the style of Roberto too because it gives it a freer feel to it. For the most part, we stayed in time but we did slip out of time now and at the end we were completely out. I think a piano note slipped at around 1:20 too.

Things to work on: Timing and trying not to slip a note.

Take 1

Around 1:50 a piano note slipped. Around 2:28 there was a wrong guitar note and the last chord was way out of time.

Take 2

Slightly out of time and the last note was slightly out but it’s getting closer and closer in time.

Take 3

Guitar is very quite and there’s a lot of spill in the mix so we’re going to try and rerecord the guitar separately to get a clearer sound. Slightly out of time but it’s not too noticeable.

Take 4

Cello follows the piano throughout but it builds up a lot of emotion. The violin creates tension. Synths give a little more of a melancholy feel without following the piano entirely. The structure is very strong and the accompanying instruments help drive the emotion.
