To begin with, there are 6 flats so therefore this piece is in the key of Gb major. The tempo is 80 BPM but the “rubato” allows the pianist to flow in and out of that and give them a more flexible tempo, this is good for expressing emotion. There are several legato lines which make this piece sound smooth.
For the first 4 bars, right hand plays Eb, Gb (alternating) for 2 bars and then Db, F (alternating) for 1 bar and finally, Db, Gb (alternating) for 1 bar. In the left, you alternate Gb, Bb for 1 bar, Gb, Cb for 1 bar, F, Ab for 1 bar and Gb, Bb for the final bar. All together, the chord sequence is vi, IV, V, I and you press the pedal down, and hold it, each changing bar.
For bars 5-8, the right hand repeats again but the final bar is now alternating between Db and F instead. In the left, we alternate between Ab, Cb for 1 bar, Gb, Bb for 1 bar, F, Bb for 1 bar and F, Ab for the last bar. This chord progression is ii, vi, iii, V. The pedal does the same movement all the way through, hold down for each bar.
