Roles Within The Music Industry

Composer:

A composer is a musician that writes, directs or creates original music. Productions of their compositions, scores and arrangements can be used to produce various different entertainment media such as video games, advertisements, movies and many other things.

Depending on experience, you can get paid anywhere between £21,000-£37,500, 1-4 years experience then you would only get paid less than someone with say 10-19 years of experience. In the UK you can get paid anywhere between £21,00-£40,000 but £30,000 tends to be the average.

A composer needs a lot of musical knowledge on aspects such as rhythm, melody, tone and texture. The composer also needs to understand the given instruments limitations and possibilities, such as a humans vocal range, so they’re getting the most out of their instrument without pushing too hard for a sound that the given instrument can’t actually obtain. It’s not necessary but it is useful if a composer has a lot of technical knowledge too as many composers also work electronically as they have more possibilities to work with.

Some famous composers are Beethoven, Mozart and Bach.

Producer:

A producer is a musician that ensures a recorded song is refined enough before distribution. For example, a lot of people auto-tune their voices to match radio quality or they can change levels so it’s more appealing to the ear, like not making the song sound super basie.

An average earning of a musical producer is anywhere between £45,000-£81,000 per year.

To be a musical producer, there are a lot of skills you require, such as work ethic. Work ethic is especially essential in this form of work because there will be so many long hours and patience needed to get through a project. Having a collaborative ability is a must because otherwise you can’t really have any work and if artists don’t feel comfortable working with you, because maybe you’re not really sociable, then you’ll just be out of work for a long time. Networking is kind of crucial because you need to get your name out there in order to collab with big artists. In order to get big artists, you’ll need recruiting abilities and you’ll want big artists because they can really help push your name. Recording and mixing is how you do your work so a vast knowledge of recording techniques is also crucial. Having a good ear is also useful because there will be a lot of different tracks that you need to mix together so you really need to be able to spot anything out of tempo or timing, or anything that just doesn’t really work.

Some famous producers are Marshmello and Kanye West.

Promoter:

A promoters role plays a huge part in the success of the artist/band. The promoter deals with publicizing and promoting performances, they organise gigs and book bands/artists whilst also advertising the show. They work closely with artist and manager in planning an event.

They earn approximately £40,000-£114,000.

Being a promoter plays such a big role in the business side of music that it’s kind of useful if do have a degree in business or marketing but it’s essential that you just have a love for music itself. The business side is so heavy because you will need to do a lot of negotiations with artists, venues, hotels and everything/everyone really. Your negotiation skills really tell you how good you will be at this job.

Famous promoters are people like Sharon Osbourne and Harvey Goldsmith.

Publicist:

Music publicists handle all the media and public relations side of the industry. A lot of the time the artist/band gets advice from their publicist before making a any public communications to ensure that they don’t tarnish their own name. These people also prevent anyone else from giving the artist/band a bad reputation.

Depending on which celebrities, and how high status they are, you work with also defines how much you’re paid. For example, low celebrities only pay around £30,000 or maybe less but for bigger artists you can earn anywhere between £45,000-£65,000.

Most publicists have an undergrad in English, Public Relations, Marketing, Advertising, Journalism or Communication. However, those with a university degree have access to internships at local PR firms and recording labels with PR departments so they have experience.

Some famous examples are Organic Music Marketing. AMW Group and Planetary Group.

Tour Manager:

A tour manager’s job is to make sure that the concert tour is all running smoothly and as it should be. They’re in charge of looking after the tour finances and all round making sure everyone is where they’re meant to be, when they’re meant to be and doing what they’re supposed to be, how they’ve been told.

They earn approximately £46,000 a year.

Being a tour manager can be very tough if you lack financial and social skills because a lot of it revolves around budgeting and communicating with a variety of different people, including band members up to hotel staff etc. You also need to be very good at planning events because you will work closely alongside the promoters etc.

Famous examples of tour managers are people like Sam Culter, Richard Cole and Chuckey Charles.

Artist:

An artists role is huge, especially because they’re at the forefront of it all so they get all the backlash of everything that happened within the show. An artist is someone who creates, performs or releases music.

They earn around £35,000 a year but it also depends on how many sales they make on their concerts or any releasing songs they’ve done. However, a large percentage also goes to their team, such as managers etc.

It’s helpful if the artist has a little technical experience because then they can just set up their own equipment and it just helps everything run more smoothly. The artist of course needs to know how to actually play their instrument but they also need a vast understanding of rhythm, timing, melody, harmony, fluidity and all stuff like that otherwise the show can easily mess up.

There are many famous artists such as Demi Lovato, Lauren Jauregui, Camila Cabello and Justin Bieber.

What role I want:

I want to be an artist because I love the idea of creating something that is your own and having a project to work on with other people that you get to learn from, like when you work with a producer. I also love the idea of performing in front of a crowd, even though I haven’t actually done that yet, and leaving them in “aw”. I also love watching people like Demi and Lauren at home and I, one day, want to be where they are.
