Initial Ideas

Idea 1:

Compose over an edit. Just like when we composed over the temporal distortion, I was thinking about creating my own edit and then writing a score for it.

I would be using my phone to take the photos and videos. This is good because it’s really easy to take anywhere with me so I can get a lot of really nice picture and videos of anywhere I go. However, phone quality isn’t as great as a professional camera quality is but a professional camera is quite expensive so I’m unsure if I’ll get one in time and might just end up sticking to my phone. I’ll also be recording on my phone in my bedroom so I’ll have to get some thick curtains to try and block out as much background noise as possible.

I’ll be using editing apps called “KineMaster” and “Expose” which are both free and I have experience on them both so I’ll be able to edit a lot easier. However, I’ll need to be careful with editing because sometimes the edits can look really unrealistic and then it takes away the affect of the music because they’re concentrating too much on the edit. For editing, I could also collaborate with some of my friends who also do a lot of editing to help get the smoothest take.

Idea 2:

Creating an EP. I’ll need someone to sing over the tracks I make and I was thinking of creating 3 tracks.

In order to create an EP, I’ll have to find some singers or sing over it myself so I’ll need to create the tracks and possible have some lyrics ready for the singer so they’re already and just need to be recorded. Once they’ve recorded their bits, they can send their parts over on Instagram etc and then I can just add it in. I was thinking of using GarageBand because I already know how to use it so I won’t need to spend time trying to figure it out.

However, GarageBand ,sometimes, doesn’t have the best sounds so I’ll probably download some more apps and then record some sounds on those and import the sounds into GarageBand.

Idea 3:

Upload a performance video. Due to COVID, we can’t really do a live performance and a livestream usually has a lot of lag but a pre-recorded performance can be edited, so visually it’ll look good, and it’ll minimalise like a messy and unprofessional look.

I will need a place to perform, that’s quite, and possibly get different angles so I might have to record more than once so I can swap between different camera angles. The only problem is that it has to be quite and it’ll all be recorded on my phone so I’ll need to make sure I have enough storage etc.

Peer Feedback: Nial

Idea 1 – own composition, all on phone not great, self editing problems with storage recording and collaboration with others from college- get better recording devices and better storage
Idea 2- own Ep, needs other singers, online practice sending to singers, issuing garage band- getting singers to record could be difficult and software could be hard to record
Idea 3- upload video due to lag with a singer or other musicians- could be difficult to record as a groups

Evaluation:

I can also try record audio on my laptop instead so I can save the storage on my phone for the picture and videos for my edit. I can then only export the footage and audio I will be using, onto my iPad so I save storage on all my devices and there’s no confusion of which footage and audio I am using.

I can advice singers on what kind of setting they can use, like add thick curtains to stop outside noise from interfering, and I can edit out a little bit of the background noise by making maybe the piano or something a bit louder, but I don’t really want to do that because it can sometimes over ride the vocals.

Instead of recording in groups, we could send over each others takes and then edit it to keep in certain parts of each takes etc.

I think I’m going to do a composition over the top of an edit because I can push my photography skills, editing skills and ability to make my music tell a story. I’m going to record footage onto my phones, audio onto my laptop and then import the footage and audio I am keeping onto my iPad so I can edit them together. I’ll edit the audio using GarageBand and I’ll edit the footage using “KineMaster” and “Expose” because I already have experience on the apps so I can get a really good out take on them. I could potentially collaborate with other photographers for their photos but if I can’t find any then it’s fine because I can just take all of my own photos.
