Songwriting

Technique 1:

List 5-10 things around you that you can see, hear, touch, taste or smell. After, pick out the things that you find most interesting and write either a short story, poem or lyrics about them. I wrote a poem:

Birds outside,

singing through the cold.

Bringing some kind of glow,

something to behold.

Breeze blows in,

A white feather.

Sitting on my knee for protection.

Technique 2:

This is basically the same as tip 1 but this time, you have to look at things that might not have been interesting or have caught your eye when you sat down. I wrote a poem again:

Stacked notebooks beside my piano,

each line

each word,

a mystery to the world.

Every scribble,

every line,

every carefully constructed rhyme

leads to a story that sits behind,

every melody of the keys.

A metronome to keep in time,

remembering all that’s mine,

and a lit candle

to help me realign.

Technique 3:

This technique is about noticing colour and how colour can reflect something, like when you say the grass is greener or when you say someone’s very yellow. I wrote a poem called “the colours of life”:

The colours of life,

so tender, blue and bright.

From yellow to orange,

and left to right,

purple notes blending into blue,

every word I’ve ever wrote,

always leads back to you.

Technique 4:

This is just like tip 3 but this time, think about how colours can relate to each other more. I wrote a poem for my example:

Blue skies and calm oceans,

cold days but pure devtion.

Each wave of blue,

washes away and uncovers you.

Bright rays of sunshine,

Deepening to orange.

They combine to make the perfect version of you.

Green, yellow and blue,

what do you feel?

let the ocean was away what’s untrue,

and unravel the real you.

Technique 5:

Metaphors and similes are really good to keep the mystery in what ever you’re writing. I wrote a poem called “Life’s metaphor”:

Life is like an ocean,

it comes and goes in waves.

Energy and devotion,

but no clear end to the game.

Pushing against the current,

only to stay afloat.

Pacing over the words,

that I’ve already re-wrote.

The metaphor to life,

is to live of survive.

Technique 6:

Next is to write a Haiku! A Haiku is a Japanese poem that consists of 5 syllables on the first line, 7 syllables on the next and 5 syllables on the last (17 syllables in total).

Dark blue skies,

living under the moonlight,

silently screaming.

Technique 7:

Next is to write about something personal, maybe it’s a dream or a wish or an experience, but when you’ve felt what you write, you’re able to dive deeper. However, be careful in trying not to repeat yourself when writing something quite personal to you!

Waves of stardust and light,

wash over me at night.

In my dreams,

I’m everything I want to be.

Every key and every note,

all in perfect harmony.

And when I wake up,

I’ll be right where I wanna be.

Technique 8:

Try writing about something that gives you inspiration or invokes a lot of emotion in you so you have a lot to write about. I chose nature.

I hear the birds,

I feel the breeze,

Mother nature is holding me.

Every dream, every prayer,

answered without a care.

Rain and snow,

allowing you to glow.

Stand in the moonight,

and allow everything to be alright.

Technique 9:

Building a character to write about can draw a lot of inspiration because you create every aspect of their character and then write about how they’d feel, or anything like that, but there’s endless possibilities because you can make them up! However, try make it believable though because the best songs are what people can relate to.

I look and see a world,

full of everything you can imagine.

From the dream world to the real world,

I can see all the magic.

From the ocean to the land,

I see beauty from where I stand.

And from darkness to the light,

Everything seems so right.

Technique 10:

Write non-stop for 2 minutes, It can be words or just letters, anything because it will still invoke your brain to think.

Technique 11:

Write nothing for 2 minutes! Let your brain think for 2 minutes without writing anything down. After the 2 minutes, write down anything you remember thinking or you feel now.

Technique 12:

Write about your favourite person! Whether it’s a family member, friend or celebrity, write about why they’re your favourite person and what you love about them.

Technique 13:

Write about your relationship with a random object. I chose a notebook.

It has every single thought in it and every event that I felt I needed to write down. It’s just a place where I can write or draw anything and just fully express myself without fear of hurting someone else or judgement. I use it every day and pretty much everyone and everything is either wrote or drawn in there.

Technique 14:

Write about your 5 senses, you can use all 5 or just do one at a time. I wrote a poem but I didn’t finish it.

Hear, see and feel,

using these everyday.

Without a second look at what they reveal.

Taste delight,

feel fright,

hear right,

and see light.

All taken advantage for.

Technique 15:

Describe your perfect day!

I wake up and read whilst eating some fruit for breakfast. After, I meditate under the sunshine for 30 minutes and then grab my guitar, some friends and head to the beach (p.s. I’m pretending COVID is over). We sit and spend all day there before we go to a Demi Lovato meet and greet! Then we go to her concert on the night time and Lauren Jauregui opens up for her and then we have the best night singing along to Demi before we go home and stargaze until we fall asleep.

Technique 16:

write about your worst day. This one was really hard because everything I said, I could think of something positive in it so I just went extreme.

Wake up late, to a noisy house, and have to rush around to get ready. I log onto my phone to see that all my favourite bands have broken up and my favourite artists are all retiring.

Technique 17:

Find a random object and write a story or something about it.

The blank notebook,

that sits on the side.

Appearing dull and boring,

but full of questions why.

No word or lie,

for another humans eye.

Full of screts and truths,

but don’t try to pry.

Made invisible by it’s appearance,

but everything inside is far from,

the notebook that sits on the side.

Technique 18:

Sit and think. You can write or anything but it’s better to just let your brain roam for at least 2 minutes.

Technique 19:

Write about what you last ate, like was it nice, where was it from, did you make it and how much did it cost etc.

Technique 20:

These are just a bunch of extra tasks you can do to try get inspired:

Write a letter to your future self

Write a character based off someone you know

10 personality traits you have

10 things you want to do everyday

what did you just think about?

write a song about a complex love

write a diary entery in code

define some words without using that word in the definition.

There’s also this website that can generate some random lyrics, most are bad but sometimes, you can take lines from.
