This song was performed in 2006, live on “Other Voices” in a small church in Ireland. This song has had a massive change compared to the original, especially in dynamics and the atmosphere as a whole.
The performance starts by setting of the funeral atmosphere by including the flowers, dressed in dark colours and smart attire. However, the music video also gave off kind of a resentful and sassy vibe but the performance seemed more emotional and almost kind of isolated Amy’s vocals to strip the song down more and give it much more of an emotional side.
They stripped the song down a lot by using dynamics, Amy was much higher than the guitarist and the guitarist higher than the bassist. The way the band was only 2 men long also stripped the song down to it’s bare minimum so we could really focus on Amy’s lyrics and raw emotion of the song. At times, the song did sound a little empty, like when she sang “black” over and over for the verse, but I think she did this so the audience could focus on the songs meaning and how she was expressing it emotionally, instead of on the song as a whole.
However, I wouldn’t say the venue worked too well in her favour because they were quite quiet. On the other hand, if the song is giving off funeral vibes and meaning to be more emotional then the church setting was incredibly creative because funeral services can take place in churches so she really took that into consideration.
Overall, Amy really managed to make you feel something out of her performance through her strong expression of emotions but the way she isolated her vocals really made you feel a connection to what she was singing. However, I’d say maybe move a little more with the music so she doesn’t look so stiff, especially seeming as the other musicians are moving with the music.
