Peer Feedback:
Strengths – I was confident in my idea and clear on my plan. I used my time appropriately by planning each part of the project out, i.e. allocating time for the composing and design parts etc. Use of media made my idea clear and gave them an idea as to the kind of sound I was aiming for. I explained in detail which provided information about what I’ll be using and what I’ll be research etc. Presentation was straight forward and easy to follow.
Improvements –
Some questions asked:
Will you be using graphics or live footage of you playing? I’ll be designing graphics for each track on the Ep.
When will you be recording your work into Logic and who will mix it? I’m hoping to record as I go along so it doesn’t slow down the process but I might record all the takes at once, after I’ve wrote all 3 piano compositions, so if I don’t have to rerecord any changes I make. I’ll be mixing it myself.
What production skills will you use? I’ll be using Logic to record live piano and percussion in but also midi keys to record the strings through a software. I’ll be mixing and mastering the tracks myself.
How long are you planning to make each track? Approximately 2-4 minutes long.
What type of percussion? I’m wanting to use latin percussion, like bongos and claves, because I think they really compliment each other really well.
Some comments were for me to plan out more of the sounds I’ll actually be using, like with the percussion, and to speak a little more clearly. Some also spoke about the unclear detail in my promotion plan.
Tutor Feedback: (from Nic)
Strengths – To start with, he said I gave a very good presentation with a very comprehensive and exciting idea. He pointed out how quickly and easy I could get my risk assessment done because I already had a good starting point and that it’s good that I’ve already started writing.
Improvements – As exciting as the idea sounds, it’s a very big project with a little time frame. He asked how I’d manage the whole project and suggested it might be a good idea to choose between either a performance project or EP project. Whilst my plan was very clear, he asked how practical it was because only allowing a week to compose for the accompaniments didn’t really allow time for experimentation and there’s many things such as harmonies, melodies, string techniques and articulation that I had to think about within that 1 week time frame I had set aside. Lastly, he mentioned I needed to ingrain promotion from the start and throughout so that there’s enough time to reach people. He also mentioned researching different promotional techniques.
Personal Feedback:
Strengths – I think I delivered my presentation and idea with precise detail. I used videos of my inspiration to show how I plan for mine to sound and I also included my video from last year to show that I already have experience in the project I’m doing and how I’m working to my strengths. Very ambitious idea with a lot of challenging ideas.
Improvements – Although I had a lot of detail and a good idea of what I was doing, I did fail to include a detailed plan that included the freedom to experiment, especially for the accompaniment instruments. There’s a lot going on and it might be wise to ask for some help, especially in the mixing and mastering area.
Evaluation and Reflection:
After my presentation and feedback, I think I might change my plan. I gave myself two weeks to research but given as I don’t really have that much to research, I think I’m going to narrow it down to just a weeks research of strings, promotional techniques and researching how Spotify works. I don’t really need to research how to compose because I’ve composed for a lot of my projects now so I can just use those as reference points, as well as listening to different composers daily. This gives me an extra week that I can use for composing my accompaniments, which gives me a week to compose for each instrument. I think this is enough time because I’ll have the piano compositions done so I’ll already have an idea of how I want the accompaniments to sound and I’ll have the accompaniments research, such as their harmonies and melodies etc, done so it gives me time for creativity and to just play around with them until I like the sounds.
In the upcoming weeks, I’ll be researching things such as: the best ways to promote on all the different platforms I’m using. I’ll be researching how well paid promotion works and what the best apps are for that. I’ll be researching what kind of colours, fonts and pictures catch the idea when scrolling as well as what length of video is likely to be put on peoples algorithms.I’ll be research common percussive beats using Claves, bongos, clackers and shakers. I’ll be researching what chords each of the orchestral instruments can use, which won’t take me long because I have previously researched this so I just need to refresh my memory. I’ll be research different string techniques and string articulation, as well as harmonies and melodies between each of the stringed instruments and the piano.
Due to the heaviness of the project, I’m most likely going to cut the documentary style video because I feel like that adds another job. However, I think it’s a creative way to document my work so I might collect footage and if I have time at the end, I’ll edit them together but if not them I have footage for my weekly evaluations.
