Sibelius Compositions Evaluation

This is my first task on Sibelius. It is quite a simple piece, however for my first time I think it is good. I only used semibreves, so there is no real melody or rhythm, however the harmony is the important thing here. It is also in C Major. I used my knowledge that the chords, I VI V and vi sound good in any order. So I chose the chord progression, vi IV I V. I am happy with my piece, as the harmony is good on the piano and it is all written in right, so for my first time doing this, I am happy with the work. I also did harmony on the strings as well, which even though it is basic I am happy with as I have never read piano or string music before this, so being able to do all this is something I am proud of. All in all I think this is a good first attempt at Sibelius, but I can definitely improve as it is very basic.

This task is the start of my composition to a moving image. I have only started it, and I have done my A section. My composition is in the key of F Major. I chose this key, as I thought C major wouldn’t challenge me enough, and I wanted to not choose the easiest option. I also chose the chord progression I ii IV vi. I chose this chord progression as I know that the chord I vi IV and I will work well in any order, so using that knowledge I decided to use the chords I IV and vi, and I wanted to make it my own thing and make it sound a bit different. In this session I got the harmony completed for my A section. This means that all the notes are in the right place. I was considering for my harmony on my piano, to use voice leading. However I then thought that I won’t because I would rather have a better melody and rhythm than use voice leading. I have also done the harmony for the strings as well. I have also thought of a structure for the piece, which is where the piece starts off with the cello; then after 4 bars the left hand of the piano comes in;then after 4 bars the right hand of the piano comes in; after another 4 bars the viola comes in; then after 4 more bars violin 1 comes in; then after another 4 bars violin 2 comes in; for 8 bars after that it is all the instruments playing; then they drop out the same way they came in, so violin 2 drops out after 4 bars; violin 1 drops out after 4 bars etc.; then when there is just the left hand of the piano and the cello, that plays for 8 bars then the final bar of my A section is just both hands of the piano playing for 4 bars. What I need to do is create a melody and rhythm for the piano and if I have time create a B section.

This is a continuation of the composition I was working on last week. The harmony is still the same, and the structure is the same. I have created a melody for my A section on the right hand of the piano. However, I am not very happy with it. I am going to change it next week so that it sounds better. I think I am going to change it into something similiar to the temp score. In the temp score it repeats two notes of the chord, for both hands of the piano. I also created a B section, however I have an issue with it. I created my B section on a different Sibelius document, so I had to copy it into the document with my A section on it. However, when I was creating the document, I put it in the wrong key signature. So when I copied it into my A section document, it sounds wrong and isn’t very good. So next week, I am going to fix that, I will do that by putting all the notes in the right place, and removing the natural symbols.

This is a continuation of the composition I have been working on for the past couple of weeks. I made a few changes to my composition this time, I changed the melody of my piano in my A section. So both hands are playing 2 notes of the chords alternatively. I think this sounds much better and generally make my A section sound more professional. I also added an intro to the track, which starts off with the left hand of the piano for 4 bars; then the right hand of the piano comes in for 4 bars then finally the cello comes in. Then after them 4 bars my A section starts. I also changed the structure of my A section, so it starts off with the piano, cello and viola playing for 8 bars; then violin 1 comes in for 8 bars; then everything plays for 8 bars; then both violins drop out for 4 bars; then the viola drops out for 8 bars; then the structure is the same as before just with the new piano melody. I also fixed the issue I had with my B section. Also my B section uses the chord progression V IV vi I. I used chance composition for this, I then listened to it and decided that it sounded good and I am going to keep it. I have also created a melody and structure for my B section, however I don’t like how it sounds. Even though it has a complicated melody, it sounds too confusing and would be better if it was a bit more simple. I haven’t figured out the structure yet as I don’t have a melody that I like. I also created an outro, which is similar to my intro, however instruments drop out instead of coming in. The piano and cello are playing for 4 bars, then the cello drops out so it is just the piano for 4 bars then finally the right hand of the piano stops playing so it’s just the left hand of the piano for the last 4 bars. However there is an issue with my score, as when the B section ends, is says there is a C section and it plays the B section again out of key. I need to fix that by next time. The improvements and changes I have to make next time is on my B section. The melody isn’t very good, so I am going to change it. I think I will change it to the same as the A section. The alternation between 2 notes of the chords. I also want to add some melody to the violin 1, I haven’t figured out what yet but I think it would sound nice to have some string melodies in my B section. I also have to work on dynamics and articulation once I have finished everything else on the score.
