Livewire at Christmas

After the success of Livewire, our first concert, as a group we decided to do “Livewire at Christmas.” The original plan for this was to do another live show, however due to Covid-19, that wasn’t possible. So instead we opted for the second best option, which was a livestream. Another thing that didn’t go to plan, was that Taunt, the band that I’m in, we had another song. Which was “Merry Xmas Everybody” by Slade. This was just going to be me, Tom and Abi as Ben and Meg (the other members of Taunt) didn’t show up to learn this song, so we decided to do it as a trio. With Tom on vocals and guitar, Abi on bass and me on drums. However, there were some technical issues, so unfortunately it had to get cut. The Hit Makers also had a song cut, which was Last Christmas by Wham.

For this concert I appeared on two songs. The first song was the song I did with Taunt, which was Run by Joji. As a band, we rehearsed this song quite a lot before this show, and I think it shows. The song sounds quite nice, and flows well between parts. I was struggling with the timing of this song, as it has very weird time signatures. Most of the song is in 6/8, however there are instances where it changes to 3/8 and there are even more strange timing in it. There is a lick usually on the fourth bar, which I struggled to nail down. As it has weird timing, it took me a while to get it consistently right. However once I understood the timing of it, I got it down. Apart from that I found this song pretty easy to get the hang of. I think it sounds good as a song and everyone did a good job.

The second song I appeared on was “Do They Know it’s Christmas.” Which was the big ensemble piece where everybody was involved. I was originally on percussion, and I had a couple instruments that I was using. I had a tambourine, cowbell and a Glockenspiel. Learning how to use a tambourine and a Glockenspiel was a fairly easy process, however playing them well took a little bit of rehearsal time. Once all of the other students started rehearsing with us, my role got shortened a little bit. As other people needed instruments to play, so I ended up just being on the Glockenspiel. Which you can’t really hear it very much in the song, however it is there. I think I did a good job playing the riff during the song, and I added exactly what it needed.
