Evaluation

This is my evaluation for the piece of work above. The reason I played this song is because it is part of my set list in the band that I am in, so I was already confident in the song, I also very much enjoy the song. I am happy with most of my playing, I am a few mistakes such as in the start of the verse and in the first pre chorus. Apart from that I played the song the way I should and I am happy with most of it.

As there is no backing track you can’t tell if it is in time and synchronised well. With the current situation I couldn’t find a way to put the backing track in with my playing, so next time I would find a way to put the backing track into the performance.

The camera quality isn’t the best as it was just on my phone, and the angle isn’t the best as I’ve never done this before. This is similar with the audio quality as it was recorded with my phone, I am also in a glass room which makes the sound audio even worse. My drum kit isn’t the best drum kit and it also hasn’t been tuned for a while, so next time I will fix this up.

The dynamics in the video are quite good as it is never too loud or too quite. When there is a crescendo build it works well but never sounds too annoying, this is something I am proud of in this video.

My stick control in this video is decent. When I am doing the 16th notes I sometimes play them too heavy which makes the drumming not sound the best they could. It makes the listener not really hear the snare drum which is big issue. The way I can improve this is to hit the snare drum louder and better, and I can play the hi hat with more control so it sounds better.

There isn’t many fills or rudiments in this song so it doesn’t show my skill at them. There is only one point where I improvised or did a fill which was near the end the roll on the snare drum and the two toms. This wasn’t the most complex roll or improvisation but it wasn’t in the original song. I could improve this but adding more of my own flair and style of playing.

My posture can sometimes be quite bad and it is something I can improve upon.

This song is a very technically filled song. The beat involves all 4 limbs and requires the player to be good at playing. I think I did well with my overall playing and the use of my hands and feet. I could work on a few things such as my hi hat playing and my double and triple bass drum playing.

This song is very bass drum, snare drum and hi hat heavy, so it doesn’t utilise a lot of the other parts of the kit. To improve I could use more fills and add my own stuff to utilise more of the kit.

I think I could’ve been more confident in my playing, as I am not used to being recorded or playing in front of people I wasn’t as confident as I could’ve been. This can be improved by just playing more in front of people.

I also could’ve been much more musically engaged and put more into the song, I didn’t feel the rhythm as I was just in my house playing. This can be improved by playing with a band and in front of a live audience.

By playing this I have learnt some things I need to improve upon. Such as my 16th note playing, my snare drum playing and the overall feel of the song. However they can all be improved with time and practice.
