Evaluation Week 2

This was our 2nd week on the project, and we only had two days this week as there was a training day, however we made good progress. Also Ben wasn’t here for personal reasons. We worked on our first original and the cover song this week.

The song is quite different to what it was last week. We have fully played the song and figured out the structure, however it could always be subject to change. The structure is, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus x2. The 1st verse is the same, which is good as it is a nice verse as I mentioned last week. However the chorus isn’t the best, as I changed the drum beat, however it doesn’t sound any better. I went with the four to the floor beat, of having the bass drum on every beat. However, it doesn’t work the best so it still needs some work. The 2nd verse has the same issues as last week, as the piano melody isn’t fully figured out, but it has improved since last week. The new addition to the song is the bridge, which is a really nice addition to the song. It is simple yet effective, as the singing works really well with both the voices. The piano and drums are also simple, but work well. Then the chorus is played after the bridge and is repeated. However the transition between the bridge and the chorus isn’t very smooth. As the last line doesn’t fit, and the drum fill could be played at a different time than it is to make it smoother. Also the chorus should only be played once, as it gets a bit repetitive and is unneeded.

All in all, we made good progress in this week, as we fully finished the song it just needs some refining and playing more. The improvements are that the second verse needs fixing, the drums for the chorus need working on and the transition between the bridge and the chorus needs working on.

The cover song we chose to do is 11 minutes by YUNGBLUD, Halsey and Travis Barker. As Ben wasn’t here this week for personal reasons, we had to play a karoake version of the track that we play and sing over. I think we can play this song to quite a high degree. As the verses and choruses all sound good, and would sound even better with a guitar and not the karaoke track. However there are a few issues, such as the timing. In some parts of the song, such as Tom’s first verse, and other parts, the singing wasn’t in time. However that was just a mistake and can be fixed. The drums also went a bit out of time, but again that’s just a mistake. Another issue is the drum fills, the first fil that I do is good, it fits with the song and works well. However at the end of the second verse just before the drums cut out, there is a fill that could be played instead of the drums just stopping, it would sound a lot better. Also the fill that I do leading in to the 2nd chorus, isn’t right. As I play the same fill as the one before leading into the first chorus, instead of playing a longer fill that I should be playing. It would also sound better than the shorter fill as it is something different as well as being longer and on different drums.

However apart from them issues, the song is played well. With a real guitar and more playing to refine the song, as well as me refining my drum fills, it will be a very good cover.
